Daniel Wallace is the New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: The New Essential Guide to Characters, as well as many more books that explore the underpinnings of the Star Wars universe including The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force and Book of Sith: Secrets of the Dark Side. Fearless and inventive ... your kind of scum!

From its Tatooine orbit, the Alliance Forces acquired Boba Fett's starship. Within Slave I's cockpit, a treasure of secret materials were discovered. Finally shedding light on the shadowy underworld of bounty hunting, the contents can now be yours! "The Bounty Hunter Code" is the newest in a line of hybrid goodies that combine expanded universe books and high-end toys. Here we have the guide to the Bounty Hunters' Guild. The beautiful hard cover book comes in a 'blast proof strongbox.' As with the vault editions of "The Book of Sith" and "The Jedi Path," it lights up and makes cool sounds when activated. First, two buttons must be simultaneously pressed to trigger the opening of the front panel. This movement reveals the data slot. Second, when the accompanying data card is inserted, the lid finally opens. The event's fanfare is a tapestry of sound bites that include a thermal detonator, a Geonosian sonic blaster and a seismic charge. It is disappointing that operation of the strongbox is temperamental. Button performance can be flakey and there are times when the entire fanfare won't play. As with the outside of the strongbox, the book is handsomely embroidered with a Mandalorian skull. It comes with surprises like Boba Fett's driver's license and a wanted poster for Han Solo. Don't worry, if you can't read Galactic Basic, the poster has an English translation. The book itself was initially owned by Bossk and Greedo. Most recently, it was Boba Fett's. All three owners marked up the book with hand written notes. It is especially entertaining to read Boba's responses with regards to the original text and the previous owners. Topics include a history of the profession, the creed, tools of the trade and suggested techniques for capturing and disintegrating targets. The monograph is beautifully written and illustrated. As a bonus, it is accompanied by "Making A Killing," a paperback memoir by Gradossk, head of the guild. Last but certainly not least, the package comes with one of the most notorious symbols of the trade, a Kaminoan Saber Dart. Ever wonder what it takes to be a bounty hunter? Now you can read all about the galaxy's most dangerous profession thanks to the deluxe edition of "The Bounty Hunter Code."

It was pretty intriguing and well enough written for the avid Star ...

I bought the book of the Sith and was actually rather impressed with the amount of content they fit into the little thing. It was pretty intriguing and well enough written for the avid Star Wars fan. This book on the other hand is just boring. Lists of equipment from the Star Wars universe isn't much to read. Very little of the book (less than half) has to do with the Bounty Hunter's guild. The only worthwhile section was on the Deathwatch, but it was still less than twenty pages.

Definitely get the Deluxe version -- worth it!

For adult SW fans who enjoy a book that puts them "in-universe" into the Saga, I highly recommend this book as well as the related Jedi Manual, Book of Sith, and Imperial Handbook. These books are immersive and really give the reader background into the SW universe. The deluxe editions have super-worth-it bonuses like the mechanically opening case with lights and sound, plus various little removable artifacts that enhance the feeling of getting to read a book that's from the library of Boba Fett.
These books are fun to read and also nice collectibles.

Mama and her Bank Account

I won't give away the spoiler that ties together the whole plot, but needless to say it's right up there in the title of the book and it's still a surprise even after sixty years or more since the novel was first published. Kathryn Forbes must have been a delightful woman and her book is one of the finest achievements ever to have been written in San Francisco. And that's saying something, considering what a rich and cultured city ours is. One episode that will stick with me forever is the time when the little girl and her brother are talked into providing food for their whole class at school, and "Mama" saves the day by cooking up some of her good old Swedish (I guess Norwegian) meatballs. When I first read this passage I was but a little boy and had never heard of any kind of meatballs but Italian ones! Next thing you know, my mom and dad took us to dinner and the waiter asked me what I wanted to eat and I surprised them all by asking for "Swedish meatballs on little tooth picks."

It's a family book for people whose families are no longer with us. And it will rekindle the spirit of hope in everyone, with its message of universal tolerance and mother love.

A Neglected Literary Gem

I first read this novel in 1946 as a freshman in high school. The author's son was a sophomore in the same school. Dick was enormously popular, class president, a natural athlete, gifted amateur actor, public speaker and writer. Certainly a remarkable lad in his own right. (In 1947, having dropped a water bomb on one of the faculty, I knew my days were numbered and changed schools. Never ran into Dick again. So this is not a review written by a friend). That said, it was only de rigueur to read a book written by a classmate's mother.
The story line has been described by other reviewers, and their comments are right on target. One thing I might add is that Kathryn Forbes enjoyed a widespread national celebrity in the late forties, particularly after the Hollywood film was released. The story was also adapted for theater and, later, television. Sadly, celebrity is a perishable commodity.
I picked up this book and read it again last year. As a published novelist, I read it on this occasion with a very critical eye. It is as fresh as it was more than half a century ago. Not a great novel in the Faulknerian sense, but certainly a small classic. It is a charming work of great originality. Anyone interested in becoming a writer would do well to study it. See how beautifully Kathryn Forbes blends the theme and story line. Check out the clever characterization, and the simplicity of her writing style (never pretentious). This book is truly a little gem of its genre.

Read it aloud to the family or your class!

This is one of my favorite books to read aloud. I taught junior highers for many years and this was a book they loved! Many times I taught sisters and brothers in later years and they would invariably ask when I was going to read Mama's Bank Account. The story appeals to both boys and girls and though Mama is the central character, I appreciated the fact that Papa was a very strong, loving support to the family. After you have read the book, watch the video! It is one of the few books that made the transition to the screen and is delightful!

Death at Sea - A great, insightful read

Eric Brose writes a truly objective narrative about the plight of the German East Asiatic Squadron lead by Vice Admiral Maximilian Graf von Spee. Eric's "novelistic" approach, while keeping factual with many citations from letters and memoirs from the combatants, makes this a compelling story.

In his afterword, Eric Brose suggests that the outcome of World War I might have been very different, had the German squadron successfully ambushed the British at anchor in the Falklands, and successfully rejoined the home fleet in German waters.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this well researched book.

Disappointing Pseudo-History

This book promises to share the story of a very interesting series of naval engagements during WWI. It delivers something...different. The book is billed as "novelistic history", so rather than scholarly nonfiction, the reader is presented with a text that includes long passages of first person narration by the characters (some of which are fictional hybrids of real people, the author is nice enough to mention this at the END), complete with conversations and internal monologues. However, it is seldom clear which character is narrating in a given a passage; this gives the book the feel of a fractured post-modern novel rather than a book of history.

Much of the dialogue takes place between people who died during the events and as a result are largely conjectural (again the author mentions this at the end). In fact, it appears a large amount of the book is little but conjecture! Because so many of the principal actors died, the author took the liberty of presenting the reader with the dead men's thoughts and ideas as HE assumes them they were. Instead of quoting direct sources he merely supposes. The character of Captain Muller must be extraordinarily prescient as according to his "letter home" in 1917 he predicts the rise of fascist nationalism, the second world war, the arrival of "super weapons" (clearly nuclear weapons) and fears of these weapons falling into the hands of terrorists. The author's approach would probably be excellent for introducing young readers to a subject, but it is very disappointing to the adult reader.

In addition, the writing and proofreading are of low quality. there are numerous uses of the wrong words. I can forgive some malapropisms but this is entirely too much: "Sturdee had just showered and was just shaving with a towel around his waste." (p248). There are far too many more like that in the text. The author also frequently would use the same words over and over in close proximity, I recall a passage towards the middle where the word "successful" is used three times in two lines.

Avoid this book, it is not worth your time.

a first class job telling the almost fatedness of two fleets one british one german. as if acting out the predermined plan of a savage sea god we see this greek tragedy unfold.We see bumbling heroism fatalism bouyant enthusiasm and the death of an era,,,,,,well done

Greg Reese (Dayton, OH) has performed scientific programming and algorithm development in industry and research laboratories for 20 years and has written in C++ for the last 10 years. He has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and extensive experience in digital image processing, human vision, and pattern recognition. He has worked on software for several NASA projects, written three general-purpose image processing suites, created a commercial molecular-biology program for the PC, and is also the co-author of an industry-wide, medical, electronic-data standard.

One of the best amongst 2nd tier C++/STL books

This volume is definitely worth a read or two, if you want to open your eyes to a variety of applications of STL containers and algorithms. For people already into the practice and way of using STL on a regular basis, it gives you reinforcement and validation that you did good and right in your previous work. Even if you are good already, you may still learn a trick or two here and there through the pages. One of the things I wasn't aware is that a member function must be a const one (calling it won't change the state of the object) if used with a binder (bind1st or bind2nd).

IMHO, the set of books in the "C++ In Depth" series, edited by Bjarne Stroustrup and published by Addison-Wesley, belong to the first tier, high quality, and highly intellectual. A number of others in the "Professional Computing" series under the aegis of Brian Kernighan, such those by Scott Meyers, belong to the 1st tier, too. There are surely others as well.

One characteristic of the 1st tier works is that they don't spell out all the gory details; they stop short, rightfully, at elaborating on too practical side of things. That is where books such as this particular one come in to fill the void. In terms of quality and content of writing, they may be (and in many cases, in fact) not as rigorous as those in the 1st tier, but they help you see things about which beans are spilled. BTW, an example of 1st tier books about STL in particular is certainly Josuttis' "The C++ Standard Library: A Tutorial and Reference."

The C++ Standard Library is a series of routines that comes with the official version of the language. They are well written, carefully defined routines that accomplish many tasks that turn out to be common to many programs. The routines in the library are efficient enough that they are probably better than the average programmer can write. They are reasonably convenient and safe. Unfortunately, clarity, consistency, and ease of use were not part of the design goals.

Superb book!

The immune system is a favorite topic of mine. Almost everything which happens to our bodies involves the immune system. So I was very interested in a book which is on a very professional level with current information and excellent writing style. Also I feel that educational graphics are especially important to drive home the information. This book passed all my criteria with flying colors. I really enjoyed studying it and have now read it twice (there's way too much information there to absorb on just one reading!). Almost every process in the human body involves the immune system and learning to minimize inflammation is a huge leg up on feeling good! Everything from sore muscles and joints, strep throat, healing, migraine, every disease known to man, sunburn, and on and on involve inflammation. Learning the mechanisms of inflammation and immunity and how to quiet inflammation and bolster immunity REALLY adds to ones health. I highly recommend this superb book as a way to learn how to baby ones body!

Parham does not disappoint

This is a very good textbook. The publisher, Garland sciences, is one that I trust because they have always done a very good job with their science textbooks (check out Molecular Biology of the Cell, The Biology of Cancer, and others). Continuing along this trend, Peter Parham's book does not disappoint. Linguistical Current

Many of the works in Semitic languages have utilized a linguist approach that is unique to Semitic Linguistics limiting the works usefulness for general linguist studies. This study is conducted in the mode and style of contemporary linguistics, making it invaluable. But it is not for beginning students of either Arabic or linguistics. A significant knowledge of both is necessary to get the full benefit of this study.

History and background of Arabic and Dialects, not much more

I just finished reading Versteegh's book and I thought it was a good read for those interested in knowing the background of the Arabic language. There's information regarding the relationship between Arabic and Aramaic, as well as Hebrew and Arabic. A student of Arabic, like myself, would find this book to be a review of the origins and similarities between the semetic languages.

The most interesting chapters are those of the Arabic dialects. The book goes into detail about the Maghrebi, Egyptian, Levantine, and Yemenese dialects. It covers their similiarities, differences, and multiple hypotheses on why FusHa has died out before and during the colonial period in the M.E. and why it is now making a comeback due to fundamentalism.

Those interested in the linguistical diffusion of Arabic into other languages (i.e. Spanish, Turkish, Persian, Hindi, Indonesian languages) will find a brief chapter summarizing all of this info.

I finished the book in 2 days, and found myself wanting more. Perhaps it's better to get this book from a university or public library rather than spend $30.00+. Hope this helps.

In-depth linguistic analysis

This was an excellent, well researched book. It was full of history, which added context to the discussion of the dialects, and despite being a speaker, I found it full of new information. Personally, I enjoyed most the parts on the mass bedouin migrations to Egypt and the Maghreb, the story of the Banu Hilal and the Banu Sulaym, and the great amount of information on Bedouin migrations, which help explain how certain characteristics spread.
A basic knowledge of Arabic is definitely required, or it will be a tedious book to complete, and I would also say that a knowledge of linguistics would also be helpful, as the book is filled with linguistic terminology such as dipthongs, verbo-nominal compounds, infinitives, suffixes, subjunctives, etc. It would have been useful to have a glossary at the end.
The only drawback of the book is that all of the Arabic is transliterated into English. I would have found the book much easier if the words had been left in Arabic. For the next edition, I would recommend keeping the words in Arabic, and adding footnotes to the bottom of the page with the English transliterations for those who need them.
All in all, an excellent non-Arab study into the language.

About the Author
Robert DeMaria received his PhD in Modern British Literature at Columbia University. He has directed writing programs in several universities and was an editor at Macmillan. The bulk of his creative work consists of his 20 novels, but he has also published poetry, an off-Broadway play, and a libretto for an opera. For several years he was the academic dean of the New School for Social Research. He was also the director of an overseas program for American students and writers in residence. His work has been highly praised in publications such as THE LONDON TIMES, THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE BOSTON GLOBE, THE WASHINGTON POST, and many literary magazines. He and his family now divide their time between Long Island and a house in Mallorca, Spain. His latest novel is BLEECKER STREET BLUES, set in Greenwich Village.

A handy reference

I keep this book around to answer any questions that "The Elements of Style" doesn't, though sometimes the two disagree. The author's explanations of various grammar principles are simple and concise, and its chapters on dialogue and perspectives are especially insightful.

I've had my copy since college, seven years ago, and it's never been neglected.
