Not worth the money

As an amateur military historian for the past 60 years I felt that the down and dirty “Cliff note” version would suffice. Unfortunately, it was not well written or edited. The book starts out with one line about Germany’s situation and the ubiquitous photo of German Soltaten that someone put in backwards! The book would be OK for someone who wanted just the facts. Punctuation was spotty and the use of several photos leave me wondering. Chapter Four starts with a photo that is obviously Viet Nam and titled Peleliu, Caroline Islands? A water glass being filled for Chapter Ten? Maybe to highlight how dry New Mexico can be. Chapter Twenty-Six, “Russia rolled in a thousand Tiger tanks…” The Russian did not have Tiger tanks, the Germans did. Maybe a Joseph Stalin III? Overall, not a well written book even for or especially a summary.

very valuable resource

To those seeking to find out what is actually going on on the level of global governance, Payne's book is a gem. It is very scholarly and balanced in style, though by no means uncritical, and sheds light on the goings on behind the scenes of institutions such as the G7, the IMF, the WTO and the UN system in such fields as development, environment and finance. The introductory discussion of the dominant paradigms in the debates on globalization, development, the role of the state etc. and Payne's critique of all-too simple dichotomies between "developed" and "developing" countries will probably be mainly of interest to specialists in the field, while the later chapters on global politics in the fields mentioned and the institutions in which they are decided on, though not an easy read, will prove very valuable to the contemporary observer in general, especially as solid, reliable information about such topics is hard to find and the global economic institutions seem strangely shrouded in mystery. Payne's book fills that gap.

My 20 month old son enjoys this book. Hopefully soon the message will resonate with him in real life, as he's not a huge fan of cleaning up. But you really can't go wrong with the Berenstain Bears.

YES! Finally a book that allows high school and college students to look at their essays with a growth mindset. A quick read that allowed a few students to turn wack essays into essays that will earn the scholarships they deserve yesterday afternoon. If you know that an essay needs help and you are having a hard time verbalizing the changes to someone while ensuring that they walk away with the ability to do it alone, you NEED this book. I love this pithy, accessible, and informative book! Clear explanations, detailed yet succinct, plus useful tips and oft-forgotten necessities (presentation, etc). The activities and worksheets complement the text with focused, practical opportunities to develop skills and leave any trepidation behind. An Excellent Resource for Student Essay Writing!

This book is definitely a keeper! It belongs with the reference books! I’m even tempted to call it a Bird by Bird for students!

It is important to emphasize that this book is for students and student writers, not necessarily adult writers who are looking to improve their personal essay-writing skills.

With that said, this book is filled with excellent strategies and tips for reducing the amount of “wackness” in one’s essay! Now, when the author speaks of wackness (that’s an old-school term), she’s talking about things that ultimately result in the essay being bad (well, horrible). Granted, they might be common mistakes, but they are mistakes that lessen the quality of the work, and when the reader is done with a wack essay it is a big FAIL, which isn’t good. The author wants to ensure her students’ essays aren’t wack and provides an excellent tool with this book.

A warning here is while the book focuses a lot on the mechanics of writing an essay or what goes into writing an essay, it does not focus deeply on vetting out essay ideas, filtering out which supporting ideas make the essay and which get thrown out, or refraining from other elementary wackness like being indecisive about your stance (riding the fence) or copping out at the end of the essay in the myriad of ways amateurs do.
In my opinion, wackness has a lot to do with how you are intellectually and creatively presenting what you are writing about, so with a book title such as this, I thought there would be focus on assessing the quality of the ideas and advice on the compelling presentation of the ideas. To me, an essay is wack if it doesn’t offer an uncommon angle or point-of view, offer up buried or lesser-known information, and give the reader an exhilarating reading experience. But as I said before, this is a basic book on essay-writing for students. If the author writes a version for adults (hint, hint), I should hope it would include these elements so we can stop writing wack (boring and conventional) essays!

I was surprised and impressed to see attention given to productivity tips and not tolerating wack excuses for not writing, since productivity is such an important part of academic success, or rather success in general, but rarely do you see a book for students addressing it in the way this book does. The author directly and indirectly implores students to practice integrity with their writing, which is truly refreshing!

This book is well-organized, gives great explanations and examples, and is clearly written by an author who has not lost touch with what it is like to be a student. In other words, it’s not boring (though some portions sound more academic than others), nor is it written from the mountaintop to the lowly students. Rather, the voice is of a down-to-earth mentor or friend, who is no doubt a dedicated instructor who knows her stuff.

I hope I’m not spoiling any surprises here, but the back of the book contains valuable reference tools that make the information easy to use on essay-writing assignments. There is even a worksheet pertaining to her “thesis machine” that I began using right away for an essay idea I have been toying with, despite the fact that as I said, this book is meant for students.

For full disclosure, I received a free copy of this book because I am an educator but I was under no obligation to review it or to give a positive review. I just happen to believe this book is a wonderful resource for students that addresses the core issues in academic essay-writing. If I didn’t appreciate the book I would not have written a review at all, rather than to give it false praise. Now THAT would have been wack!
