Edward Said is one of the most celebrated cultural critics of the postwar world. Of his many books of literary, political, and philosophical criticism, Orientalism--a brilliant analysis of how Europe came to dominate the Orient through the creation of the myth of the exotic East--and the monumental Culture and Imperialism are the best known. His books have redefined readers' understanding of the impact of European imperialism upon the shape of modern culture. Said's career as a thinker spans literature, politics, music, philosophy, and history. As a dispossessed Palestinian growing up in the Middle East and subsequently living in the USA, he has witnessed the impact of the Second World War upon the Arab world, the dissolution of Palestine and the birth of Israel, the rise of Nasser and the PLO, the Lebanese Civil War, and the faltering peace process of the 1990s. As a result, the publication of Said's memoirs, Out of Place, is a particularly significant event. The book offers a fascinating account of the personal development of a critic and thinker who has straddled the divide between East and West, and in the process has redefined Western perceptions of the East and of the plight of Palestinian people.

However, as the title suggests, Said's memoir is a far more ambivalent and at times personally painful account of his early years in Palestine, Egypt, and Lebanon, as well as the often paralyzing embrace of his loving but overbearing parents. Said's memoirs are powerfully informed by his sense of personally, geographically, and linguistically "always being out of place." Born to Christian parents and caught between expressing himself in Arabic, English, and French, he evokes a vivid, but often very unhappy, portrait of growing up in Cairo and Lebanon under the crushing weight of his emotionally intense and ambitious family. The early sections of the book paint a poignant picture of the oppressive regime established over the awkward, painfully uncertain young Edward by his loving mother and expectant, unforgiving father, both of whom cast the longest emotional shadows over the book. Those expecting an account of Said's subsequent intellectual development will be disappointed; apart from the final 50 pages, which deal with Said's education at Princeton and Harvard, Out of Place is, as Said himself says, primarily "a record of an essentially lost or forgotten world, my early life." It is this carefully disclosed record that accounts for Said's deeply ambivalent relationship with both his family and the Palestinian cause. An influential literary critic (Culture and Imperialism, etc.), writes movingly and honestly about his life of dislocation and exile. Prompted by a diagnosis of leukemia in 1991, Said's new book is infused with a desire to document not only a life, but a time and placeAPalestine in the 1930s and '40sAthat has since vanished. Born in 1935 to a Lebanese mother and Palestinian father who had American citizenship, and raised in Palestine, Egypt and Lebanon, Said has always lived with a divided identity. Even as a child he realized that his first name was British, his last name was Arabic and his nationality was American. In a straightforward, often poetic style, Said charts his family history, his education in British and American schools and his move to the U.S. in 1951 to attend Princeton and begin what was to become a distinguished career as an academic and intellectual. The memoir's most engaging elements are the little personal details that help us understand his later work: the young Said's love of such Hollywood films as Arabian Nights, with Maria Montez, or the novels of Twain and Cooper, offer fresh insights into his later writings about orientalism. Said can be frank about his personal lifeAwhether it's learning about masturbation or his intense relationship with his mother, whom he identifies as Gertrude to his HamletAwhich gives the book moments of deep, intimate openness. In the end, this memoir is less a tidy summing-up than an acceptance and exploration of what has been. As Said says, he has "learned actually to prefer being not quite right and out of place." Capturing and touching

I very much connected with this book where Edward Said is narrating with great sincerity his feelings and interactions with the details influenced him and his upbringing as an Arab, Christian from rich family yet of Palestinian origin. Said reflects on his family chosen solitude and his own struggle to define himself across different worlds. The complexity of his relationship with his both parents,how he perceived them and how they placed their heavy expectations on his shoulders . The most touching parts for me where Said expresses intelligently the sorrow of losing a country the palace to come back to and how he transfers the sorrow in to creativity maintaining uncertainty and the capacity to question.

I believe he is trying to provide the backdrop for how his thoughts were shaped in the numerous books he produced over the years. This is not a summary or crescendo of the big ideas he worked on or through over the course of his life.

Simply great timing- presentation- focus!

A healthy dose of respect for taking the incorrect way is a driving undercurrent.
A reminder of the Art of War is present providing this a similar tone of preparation, choice of tactic, execution & providing the Leadership ... trusted empirically.

Which heightens, and engages powerfully with a sense of urgency and caution.
To offset this is always present as the warm guidance of a mentor.
Non fiction can be read in fragments. Not this one!
It goes in my book case of books not allowed to leave as.
On a rainy day it might provide the wisdom needed to lead and be a benefit to others.

This book is required reading,before entering any arena of healthcare.

About the Author
Dylan Wiliam, PhD, is a consultant who works with educators in North America, the United Kingdom, and many other countries to develop effective, research-based formative assessment practices. He is former deputy director of the Institute of Education at the University of London. From teaching in urban public schools to directing a large-scale testing program to serving in university administration, his professional path has led to a variety of positions at the forefront of education. Dr. Wiliam was also, from 2003 to 2006, senior research director at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey.

During his early years of teaching in inner-city classrooms, Dr. Wiliam focused on physics and mathematics. He later joined the faculty of Chelsea College, University of London, which later became part of King s College London. Here, he worked on developing innovative assessment schemes in mathematics before accepting leadership of the King s College Mathematics Education Program.

For three years, Dr. Wiliam served as the academic coordinator of the Consortium for Assessment and Testing in Schools, which developed a variety of assessments for the national curriculum of England and Wales. He then returned to King s College to serve as dean of the School of Education before being promoted to assistant principal of the college.

In 1998, he coauthored a major review of research evidence on formative assessment with Paul Black and has worked with many teachers in the United Kingdom and United States on developing formative assessment practices to support learning.

In addition to a doctor of education, Dr. Wiliam holds numerous degrees in mathematics and mathematics education.

Best book ever on formative assessment in the classroom

I admired everything about this book, including the context that educators must seek new ways to help students learn at higher levels not because those educators have been deficient or uncaring but because the students they serve face future challenges unlike those of previous generations. Wiliam establishes the research base for his recommendations but translates that research into very practical applications that readers could begin to apply immediately in their schools and classrooms. The book is a tremendous tool to help veteran teachers better utilize the power of assessment to improve student learning. I recommend that collaborative teams of teachers study the strategies Wiliam presents, work together to implement some of the strategies in their classroom, gather evidence of the impact of the strategies on student learning, and then collectively analyze that evidence in order to become more effective in using the strategies. I also highly recommend that this book be required reading for every undergraduate student planning to enter teaching.

compelling book

This is a truly compelling book! So many of Wiliam's ideas resonated with me, and several ideas challenged my current thinking. I read this over a long weekend. I had planned to begin implementing the strategies in this book as I was writing the following week's lesson plans. However, it didn't work that way. When I went to school Monday morning and began teaching the lessons that I had planned BEFORE reading the book, I realized that if I wanted each student in my classroom to meet the learning targets, I had to totally revise all of my lessons for that week! The book had changed my thinking radically and decisively. I am amazed to think about how my lessons have changed in just one month. I am so glad that I read this book. Each teacher should read this book!

A Book Whose Time is Now

After having taught for 40 years, I finally discovered a singular, research-based, answer to my questions about accurately assessing students in such a way as to encourage them to study for knowledge than merely for the grade. Professor Wiliam's Embedded Formative Assessment is a gem of a book for both the beginning as well as the seasoned teacher, providing not merely the "how"s but also the "why"s of formative assessment. It is clearly written, packed with very useful strategies that can be put to work "tomorrow," and substantive in its explanations. How I wish this book were available in 1970 when I earned my teaching certificate! After having taught within the German system through Fulbright, I returned home with some answers about non-toxic assessment practices, but after having read Professor Wiliam's book, I just wish I had the opportunity to return to the classroom and put into practice the brilliant suggestions he offers that turn students into active learners rather than grade chasers. And as a former staff development director, I recognize the value of this book as a basis for a continual segment in a comprehensive staff development program. I strongly recommend Wiliam's book for the following:
· Student Teachers who wish to learn how to assess accurately;
· Education Professors charged with teaching student teachers how to assess students accurately and fairly;
· Staff Development Directors who wish to have a powerful impact on the practices of experienced teachers;
· Department Chairs wishing to get some assessment consistency within their departments;
· Principals who wish to give their schools some very useful directions in order to curb the number of "failing" students in their schools.
I cannot give enough praise for the content of Dylan Wiliam's book, Embedded Formative Assessment, but I will recommend it to any educator who wants to change the culture in her students from one of "study-for-the-grade" to "study-for-the-knowledge."

Prayer book -- spiritual warfare -- Excellent

I haven't finished this book yet, but I ended up buying it for a friend also and she devoured it! The general premise is breaking strongholds off of our life. The author doesn't just give you a bunch of prayers though, but also the background into how they came to be. God shows him things in the natural universe (lots of science in this book!) and teaches him about the spirit world. While praying some of the prayers, I could sense things shifting in me. I have been reading it slowly trying to grasp some of the concepts -- science and math were never easy subjects in school. But don't let that stop you from reading it if that's how it was/is for you! You will also see what an orderly world God created. I like this book too because it contains a lot of scripture.

prayer book geared for spiritual warfare

this was a very interesting book--probably one of a kind. and--in some respects--ahead of its time. in general, it is a prayer book geared for spiritual warfare, but with each prayer, the reader can read through the background of its conception. including the research and experiences of the author's ministry. many intriguing testimonies in this book reveal the work of God in the spiritual realm--which itself is more complex than the physical realm. as they study and read through the prayers, some readers may be surprized by how a particular prayer affects them, since they had no idea there was a connection.

Amazing and powerful book

This book is amazing and so very helpful in my own life and those to whom I minister. I can't tell you how many times I have led others in these prayers and seen them find so much more healing and peace in their lives. I especially enjoyed the testimony that is given before each prayer that tells how the prayers came about and how they helped those to whom they were ministered I have found much healing and peace as a result of these prayers in my own life. Catherine's 3rd title in the Zons-series of thrillers. Emily and Bastian are at it again, as their stories overlap from the present to 500 years before. Trying to solve the mysteries of who murdered the victims in each period of time and what their connection is to each other. This title's plot twists to include an age-old curse upon twins in a family's lineage, mysterious clues to hideous murders somehow connected in time and a race to catch the killers "in time" to prevent more tragedy!

Kalter Zwilling just took second place for Indie Writers group of authors at the Leipzig Bookfair.

About the Author

Sara Golemon has been a core contributor to the PHP project since 2002, and is author of a dozen PECL extensions as well other other Open Source projects. She is actively involved in the planning and development of PHP6, and has written dozens of pages of the online manual including several whole reference sections and appendixes.

Very well done!

I purchased this book based on an immediate need at my job, and have since created two nice PHP extensions. I found it to be extremely helpful at getting started into an otherwise poorly documented area of PHP and the Zend API. It does lack depth in some areas, such as PHP5 objects. I found that consulting the source code of several existing PHP extensions was necessary to fill in some of these gaps.

Just about the only book for a long time

I work at a company where looking at source code is not an available means to decipher how things work. This book was the only way that I could accomplish my job of writing a custom PHP extension for connecting to our database product. In short, if it weren't for this book, I honestly don't know how I would have accomplished my job.

Crash course

If you need to write PHP extensions, you will need this book, simply because the information it contains is not available anywhere else. That being said, a lot of the content of this book feels like the kind of information that would normally be part of a free open source documentation.

The book assumes you are already somewhat familiar with PHP internals and basically "throws you in the deep end" right away. It is also aimed at C programmers (the language PHP is written in); if you only know PHP, you will probably have a hard time creating an extension using only the information contained in this book.

The book is also doesn't contain a lot of newer information, since it was written in 2006. Getting extensions to work with PHP 5.3 sometimes requires changes to old code that is not mentioned in this book.
