Beautiful story

This was a beautiful, touching, gripping story! I loved Phillip and Vance and how they came to be together, the premise of them meeting at the gym and how everything else would unfold, from Phillip revealing his past, and introducing his new man to his twin brother's family, to the very way Renee Stevens chose to end this novel.

Children being kidnapped by one of their parents happens more often than you'd think and how the matter was handled in the book was brilliant. We have a gay man trying to be what he's not by marrying a woman, we have a mom kidnapping her children, we have two twin brothers losing their parents because one of them is gay, a desperate father obsessed with finding his children, yet all of these negativity is handled in a way that the love, commitment, and hope of the people involved in this story breathe through every page.

I cried, I smiled, and I laughed, but in the end, all I wanted was to see Philip and Vance happy, getting everything they deserved. No More Hiding tells a truly beautiful story and I think you should all give it a try.

Not for Me

The whole "I know I'm gay but mom and dad would never accept me so I jave to get married" prologue is unbelievable. The idea that a gay gym could hide the fact that its members were gay just by having the members sign a "non-disclosure agreement" is ridiculous. From there, the story just goes downhill. Too much angst, and hand-wringing, and hidden feelings for me to endorse the story.

An awesome historical account of the early years of gaming, but barely discusses anything post-PSOne

Let me start by saying this book is thoroughly researched, well-written and often contains a narrative style that feels more fiction than non-fiction lending to a smooth, easy and immediately informative read.

The book discusses the formation of the gaming industry and starts by providing an in-depth, chronologically based look at the popular gaming consoles, business landscape and fads from 1965 to 1995 and focuses mostly on the associated hardware, initial formation of video games, formats (PC, Mac, cartridge, CD-Rom) and creation of genres rather than each individual title. Additionally, this book contains a ton of information about the global state of gaming, most notably what was going on in the UK, Europe and USSR/Russia during the 80s as well as China and South Korea during the late 90s and 2000s and features some incredibly gripping summaries of the 1983 gaming collapse and challenges creators of Ultimata Online faced in navigating a completely new open-world game design. If you're interested in the early years of gaming, this book is an absolute must-buy.

Where the book loses focus is in its discussion of the 1990s. After about 250 pages, the tightly woven, chronological narrative gives way to an unfocused mess of random games and ideas, such as Beat Mania, The Sims, and girl gaming culture. While these items are important to the overall history of gaming, it would've been nice to have them follow the structure that made the earlier chapters so enjoyable to read rather than jumping from 7th Guest and Doom to Rock Band in the span of about 40 pages without even introducing the PS2, let alone Xbox 360/Wii/PS3.

The book does finally regain its previous chronological form only to hurriedly discuss the Dreamcast through Xbox 360 in a scant 21 pages (about the same amount of time as spent on The Sims), most of which is dedicated to Pokemon and Grand Theft Auto. Sad to see a massive 15 years of gaming history crammed into such a short window. Ideally, this book should have simply omitted these rushed bits and called itself "The history of video games 1965 - 1995," leaving the history of modern gaming to a more interested author.

Furthermore, while the earlier years of gaming are pretty robust and informative, it's by no means a complete history as key ideas, systems, people and innovations are completely omitted such as the GBA, Game Gear, Neo Geo, DLC, Tiger Handheld Electronics, strategy guides, gaming magazines such as Nintendo Power, Call of Duty, Diablo, Atari's ill-conceived comback attempt via Jaguar and Lynx systems, etc.

In short, if you're interested in the early, golden-era of gaming, this is a must-buy, but keep in mind it's not close to being a complete or definitive collection of the complete history of video games.

**NOTE: This book is NOT 512 pages, it's 369. The remaining 143 pages are nothing more than a glossary and index and not part of the actual text.

Almost, but not quite...

"Replay" is definitely a worthy addition to the video game history catalog and deserves all your attention... still, it's far from perfect.
Ok, I'm aware I have started in a similar way quite a few of my latest reviews, though I trust I always pointed out some good reasons for my criticism! Maybe I'm getting a grumpy old man but it really annoys me to see excellent ideas stop just a few steps away before achieving greatness. Unfortunately, "Replay" does the same too.

The book starts perfectly: it covers the first years on the industry very well. It's well documented and gives an international perspective on the subject but, as it progresses, it completely loses focus and lacks a coherent structure: from chapters dedicated to groundbreaking events that changed the industry, we suddenly switch to new chapters dedicated to specific game genres and so on.
Maybe this is due to the interview-driven nature of the book (I guess different people talked of completely different things) or, maybe, Mr. Donovan wanted to improve on both Kent's "Ultimate History" and on Barton's/Loguidice's "Vintage Games"... but I'm afraid the mix didn't really work as well as expected. In any case, this is definitely a worth reading addition to the game history genre, though I would have preferred something with a more logical theme spanning across the whole book and driving the player from chapter to chapter.

What I think about the book

This is my bedside book for the study of the theoretical aspect of the science of astronomy. Has an intermediate level in terms of difficulty, and it is exactly what I was looking for. I did not find another like it. Highly recommended. (I'm an electrical engineer, amateur astronomer)

One of the worst textbooks I've had for Astronomy, but I guess it does the job.

I'm a little disappointed. This book was supposed to delve into the "physical" aspect of astronomy, but it doesn't even explain the concepts well.

Poetic unfolding story

Wasn't blown away by the book but liked how the story unfolds and how even though it's written in a very colloquial first person, it has some very poetic touches. Very well written, just didn't find it gripping enough

All Voice

The strength of DBC Pierre's award-winning novel is in the voice of its narrator, Vernon Gregory Little, a fifteen year old oddball kid from Texas whose best friend Jesus went on a shooting rampage at school. Because Jesus killed himself at the scene, there's no one to take legal and emotional blame for the tragedy, so the police haul Vernon into the station for questioning. Through a series of mistakes and an adolescent distrust of authority, Vernon looks more and more guilty despite not being at the scene until after the massacre. Dogged by a slimy television repairman turned reporter, ignored by a mother who wants a new refrigerator more than a freed son, and supported by his mother's best friend whose answer to every tragedy is a trip to the Bar-B-Chew Barn, Vernon is left to his own, not-so-sophisticated devices.
This novel is funny in a grating way: the humor has a forced edge to it that sometimes works but often doesn't. Malapropisms abound and quickly get tiring, mostly because the narrator is not as ignorant as the garbled phrases suggest. The language is profane and sometimes clumsy, and Vernon's hormonally-charged psyche comes out in weak, meaningless descriptions, such as piano notes "tinkling in the background, soft as ovaries hitting oatmeal." With often biting satire, Pierre turns his eye to many facets of American society: the media, the judicial system, obsession with food, small town life, religion, psychiatry, families, adolescent angst. The scenes are over the top, which is perfect for satire, but Pierre never tackles the issues with any depth or fresh insight. Instead, this novel reads as a dark comic strip punctuated by profanity. It is ultimately more ambitious than it is successful. Even its thematic development of religious imagery is clumsy. Pierre uses Vernon's friend's name Jesus frequently in a context that could confuse him with the Christian Messiah, and Vernon often talks about being nailed to a cross; these references fall heavily and without real meaning. (I find it intriguing that both last year's Man Booker Prize (The Life of Pi) and this 2003 winner rely on religious imagery to convey the plight of a naif.)
VERNON GOD LITTLE is a memorable book, told with a voice that is as distinctive as the best first-person narrators in fiction; however, a voice alone does not make a fine novel. I recommend this uneven book only for those who want to keep up on the latest prize-winners in fiction, and perhaps for those who liked A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES, a novel to which this is often compared.

"A Comedy In The Presence Of Death" & A Daring Novel!

"Vernon God Little," Mr. Pierre's first novel, won the 2003 Man Booker Prize, which is the most prestigious award for fiction in the UK. The novel is an example of satire at its best, biting, witty and at times, just plain funny. The humor, however, is very dark. Mr. Pierre's writing clearly demonstrates his contempt for the media, the US criminal justice system, capital punishment, and our contemporary culture's pandemic materialism. He takes on the seamier aspects of life in America, or more specifically, in a small town in central Texas, Martirio by name. Pierre's scathing indictment of the townspeople - their acquisitiveness; greed; mean-spirited gossip; fast food obsessions juxtaposed with their zeal for the latest fad diet; their dependence on television; and their pandering to mass media, an ever present post-tragedy intrusion into their daily lives - certainly paints a bleak picture of a community whose citizens come off poorly under duress.

At the center of the turmoil is 15-year-old Vernon Little, a 21st Century Holden Caulfield who is desperately trying to come of age, while the people of his town are determined to give him the death penalty. Vernon narrates the story in highly idiomatic but expressive English, chock-full of malaprops. He is under arrest and charged as the accomplice in a brutal school shooting where 16 students were murdered. He has become the town's "skate goat" in the aftermath of a Colombine-style massacre committed by his best friend, "Meskin" (Mexican) Jesus Navarro. Vernon ponders his friend's death, "He keeps secrets from me, like he never did before. He got weird." Vernon, who is a flawed teen, obsessed with his bowels but certainly innocent of any crime, describes himself: "....lawless brown hair, the eyelashes of a camel, big ole puppy-dog features like God made me through a fu*ken magnifying glass. You know right away my movie's the one where I puke on my legs, and they send the nurse to interview me instead." Indeed, author Pierre's talent for giving Vernon a true adolescent voice, crude language along with some brilliant insights and a sense of honor, is part of what makes this novel so strong. Vernon is at once a hormone driven, alienated anti-hero, and at the same time quietly grief stricken and noble. As events surrounding the case become increasingly chaotic, Vernon unwittingly becomes the victim of a nefarious conspiracy. His eventual and unavoidable demise is chronicled here.

Author, DBC Pierre, (The "DBC" in his nom de plume stands for "Dirty But Clean"), aptly calls the novel, "A 21st Century Comedy in the Presence of Death. He is, in reality, a native-born Australian named Peter Finlay, who lived much of his early life in Mexico. Pierre effectively builds a sense of revulsion in the reader without using heavy-handed moralization. In fact he keeps us laughing through many a sick and twisted scenario. The author's narrative is uneven at times. There are moments of brilliance that fade into page after page describing the monotonous life of Martirio's citizens. The "redneck" dialogue and vernacular are colorful and believable, and Pierre's prose is often beautiful. He is a risk-taker and if you are willing to go along with him for the ride, it is certainly a wild one. The book's conclusion is a bit too facile and felt like a cop-out to me. However, the pluses far outweigh the minuses in this excellent and far-out novel.

If you are easily offended by criticism of life in Texas, or in America, especially when not written by an American - then this is not the book for you. Otherwise, enjoy!

I think this book of series (the third) also has many plots and problems that can not conclusion coming soon, while there were many eeric points , ie insects that can control the body of human and animal, the powerful of the bronze tree (which also unknown why there were powerful).

McGehee discusses the basics of complex variables and a few applications to physics in a rigorous and understandable manner. He begins with motivation and the necessary background of the subject in chapter 1. Chapter 2 includes the fundamentals of the algebra, geometry, and calculus of complex numbers. The core topics (Cauchy's theorem and the residue calculus) of complex variable make up chapters 3 and 4. The author then applies the techniques of complex variables to various boundary value problems in chapter 5. A few of the more mathematically challenging results and their proofs are discussed in Chapter 6. McGehee includes more than 520 exercises (many with hints), nearly 100 detailed examples, and Mathematical-generated illustrations on approximately 20 percent of the pages. These features enable readers to deepen their geometric, computational, and theoretical understanding of the material. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. An excellent first course in complex analysis

This book may seem just another introduction to this subject, oriented to physics or engineering studies, (where Churchill's Complex Variables and Applications and Polya-Latta's Complex Variables stand as models to follow). However, it excells in the mathematical front, offering rich and deep information here and there, but never looking snob. To avoid boredom, I will mention some points I have really appreciated : (1) A link (the missing link, by Felipe Acker) to prove Green's theorem ("Stokes in R^2") WITHOUT the continuity of the (exterior) derivative D_xQ-D_yP of (the 1-form) Pdx+Qdy. Then, you can obtain Goursat's theorem from this improved Green. It is a pity that Acker's proof is left just aside. (2) Dixon's, Czerny's and Runge's proofs of Cauchy's integral formula.(3) The complex inversion formula for the Laplace transform. (4) The use of the Poisson integral to solve Dirichlet problem (and then, I wonder, why not to prove the Riemann mapping theorem following Riemann's way?) (5) Riesz-Fejer proof of Riemann mapping theorem, combining a part of Koebe's constructive proof, and Ascoli-Arzelá theorem "instead of" Montel's one.(6) Caratheodory-Osgood-Taylor extension of Riemann mapping theorem to domains with boundary (very well covered too in Ash-Novinger's Complex Variables: Second Edition). Rewarding and revealing. Good illustrations, good exercices (without soutions, alas!) and a refined bibliography, (binding is gorgeous too). Things to include in a future second edition? more hints and solutions for the exercises and an introductory chapter on entire, meromorphic or Euler functions could add further utility to this book. Anyway, Mcgehee's compares well with some illustrious introductory books, like Levinson-Redheffer's Complex Variables + Solutions Manual, 2 Items, Nehari's jewell Introduction to complex Analysis second edition, or the more extensive Introduction to Complex Analysis (AMS Chelsea Publishing) by Nevalinna and Paatero. It is less wide than the omnipresent and influential Ahlfors' classic (which includes elliptic functions at the 3rd edition and introduces the Riemann surface and uniformization of a holomorphic function) or than Ash-Novinger's (that includes the Prime Number Theorem) but, after getting acquainted with Mcgehee's you can safely try more advanced and comprehensive works, like R.B. Burckel's An Introduction to Classical Complex Analysis, (Volume 1 - Birkhauser, Volume 2 - Ac. Press), Markushevich's Theory of Functions of a Complex Variable, Second Edition (3 vol. set), Remmert's Classical Topics in Complex Function Theory (Graduate Texts in Mathematics) or Einar Hille's two volume treatise Analytic Function Theory, Volume I (AMS Chelsea Publishing), Analytic Function Theory, Volume II (AMS Chelsea Publishing) (v. 2). Finally, let me suggest as further reading Siegel's master work Topics in Complex Function Theory, (three volumes), Interscience, Wiley. Also, a modern view of Riemann-Roch theorem and Abelian integrals is in P. Dolbeault's Analyse complexe (Collection Maitrise de Mathematiques Pures), Masson (1990);ISBN-10: 2225814252.
