A modern and comprehensive introduction to discrete structures
With clear definitions and theorems and carefully explained proofs, this classroom-tested text presents an accessible yet rigorous treatment of the material. Numerous worked-out examples illustrate key points while figures and tables help students grasp the more subtle and difficult concepts. "Exercises for the Reader" are interspersed throughout the text, with complete solutions included in an appendix. In addition to these, each section ends with extensive, carefully crafted exercise sets ranging from routine to nontrivial; answers can be found in another appendix. Most sections also contain computer exercises that guide students through the process of writing their own programs on any computing platform.

Instructors who teach courses in discrete structures can find plenty of quality exercises readily usable for homeworks, tutorial discussions and exam material.  Quite a number of them can be used as projects for further exploration by the students, either in groups or individually.
I heartily recommend this textbook and have been using it both in preparing teaching materials and in educating myself.
--IACR Book Reviews, Sept. 2014

"… this textbook is excellent. The author clearly had put a lot of effort in presenting the topics clearly and as engaging as possible. His many years of teaching and mentoring clearly show. The more I read it through the more I like the book, especially how the exercises are so carefully selected and presented. For this reason alone, this book is worth keeping and using. …
The topics covered should provide enough materials for two or even three semester courses.
I heartily recommend this textbook and have been using it both in preparing teaching materials and in educating myself. …
The level of difficulty makes this book suitable for undergraduate and beginning graduate students of mathematics and computer science."
―IACR Book Reviews, September 2014

"…this is the most physically readable textbook that I have seen in a long time. The print is clear and large … The text is readable, there are many examples and in many cases proofs of the theorems are included. A large number of exercises are provided and split into two categories, the traditional math problem and exercises to be performed on a computer. … The two most important courses in the computer science major are the first programming and discrete math classes. Each establishes a foundation of skills that will be repeatedly used throughout the major field of study and this book is an excellent text for the development of the needed skills in math."
―Charles Ashbacher, MAA Reviews, March 2011

NOT easy reading - SOLID overview
By Michael Reeves
I am over one third through a first reading of this text. I have a general methodology for reading texts or reference texts. First, a quick read through. Next a read through with note taking. Lastly, a final read through with additional note taking and working of exercises.

I bought this text because I am taking a college course in Discrete Structures this Fall, 2011, for my major in Computer Science. The course has no assigned text per se. Hence, the need for a comprehensive text to scare the bejeebers out of me, and get a good, solid grasp of what the topic encompasses. This text definitely does both.

This text is considered a one-semester course. It covers basic Number Theory, Probability and Statistics, Cryptography and Cryptanalysis, and much more.

Since it includes theory as well as practical exercises for the student, and requires the student to prove some of the theorems, it might be classified as an upper division text for the undergraduate student after completion of a course in mathematical proofs or similar.

Regardless, this text challenges me to learn beyond my comfort zone. Yes, it is intimidating. Yes, some of the material is beyond my current training and exposure. And, definitely, YES, I will learn more each time I read and study through it.

As I am always looking for texts to become a permanent addition to my library, this text definitely qualifies for permanent status. It will sit very nicely next to my:"The Art of Computer Programming, Volumes 1-4A Boxed Set, Donald Knuth".

I believe this text deserves closer examination as a course text or reference text for your library.

Respectfully,

Michael J. Reeves, AA, ASc

An Essential Part of Any Library
By Mark Wylie
This is a book that truly merits the label "must reading." It played a role in changing my own thinking on politics and history when I first read it in the early 1990's. During my "College Republican" days, my view of Martin Luther King, Jr. was not especially favorable, and I was almost totally ignorant of the history and background of the civil rights movement. But after reading Taylor Branch's book, I could no longer shut my eyes to the hard truths to which he bears brilliant witness.
Martin Luther King is the central figure in Branch's narrative, but the book is much more than a biography, as befits its subtitle, "America in the King Years, 1954-63." For example, Branch begins his account with the stormy tenure of Vernon Johns as minister at Montgomery, AL's Dexter Avenue Baptist Church--at which church Johns was replaced by a young man still often known as "Mike" King. By broadening his account beyond King's own experiences, Branch accurately conveys how the civil rights movement was far more than just the activities of a few well-known leaders.
Branch's research would do credit to any professional historian. He conducted hundreds of interviews and worked with a vast amount of primary source material. His writing is compelling, repeatedly capturing the intensity of both public and private events. Even though the hardcover edition is over 900 pages, when I first read it I found it incredibly hard to put aside.

Authentic & Comprehensive History of Civil Rights Movement
By Barron Laycock
Presenting an authentic and comprehensive picture of the mammoth civil rights movement in the United States in the post WWII era is a daunting task, yet noted author and journalist Taylor Branch has succeeded masterfully with this, the first of a two-volume history of the struggle of blacks in America to find justice, equality and parity with the mainstream white society. Tracing the rise of the singular leader personified in the young Rev. Martin Luther King, Branch sets the stage for a wide range of events, personalities, and public issues. This is truly a wonderful read, fascinating, entertaining, and endlessly detailed in its description of people and events, and quite insightful in its chronicling of the fortune of those social forces that created, sustained, and accomplished the single most momentous feat of meaningful social action in our nation's contemporary history.
His range of subjects is necessarily wide and deep, and we find coverage of every aspect of the tumultuous struggle beginning in the deep South, and gradually working its way north and west until most of the urban northeast also surrendered to the battle cry for civil rights and justice under the law. In many respects this borders on being a biography of Martin Luther King and his times, yet Branch so extends his coverage of the eddies and currents of the movement itself that it appears to be by far the most comprehensive and fair-minded treatment of the civil rights movement published to date. Whether covering the issue of Martin Luther King's own personal life, his internal philosophical concerns, or his appetite for young white women, the reader is engaged with every element of this and a thousand other personalities, issues, and events that carved out the history of our country for almost twenty years.
One finds a very detailed of the Kennedy involvement in the movement, first as a purely political ploy to help to win the black vote in the extremely tight race for the Presidency in 1960, and then as an administration struggling to do what was right in the face of enormous social, political, and even economic opposition. Here too we find an absorbing account of how the FBI attempted to infiltrate and influence the movement, with J. Edgar Hoover's adroit political savvy and deep-seated racism causing great difficulty and a number of tribulations for the civil rights cause. The names and places and events described here are legion, and one gets the sense that anyone who had a conscience was involved, and many of the names mentioned later went on to greater accomplishment and further noteworthy contribution in their public lives and careers.
This, then, is a stupendous first volume of a wonderful two-volume history of the civil rights movement in the United States, and covers the period from the late 1950s when the first rumblings of the movement were sounded until just after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Dallas in November of 1963. The second volume picks up the thread thereafter, extending out through the Johnson years and including aspects of the coalescence of the movement with the Vietnam anti-war protest. This is a wonderful book, and one I would consider essential reading for anyone with an interest in American history in the 20th century. I highly recommend both books, and I hope you appreciate reading them as much as I did. Enjoy!

Comprehensive and moving
By A Customer
I was bored by historical books. That was until I opened the first page of Taylor Branch's book. His ability to mix history, narrative and personal descriptions of the people involded in the civil rights movement made my reading extremely enjoyable, informative and captivating. At times I wad moved to tears and almost no book has had that effect on me so far. The book does not only focus on M.L. King himself and all the other characters involved made me feel part of a broader struggle for more humanity. It has been months since I read the book and my first impressions have remained as strong, I would advice it to anyone who wants to have fun, to be moved and learn at the same time. The civil rights movement is an essential part of history, you should read the book for your personal development, that is, development of your mind and of your heart. Just wonderful!

Iconoclastic Theology: Gilles Deleuze and the Secretion of Atheism (Plateaus New Directions in Deleuze Studies EUP), by F. LeRon Shults

F. LeRon Shults explores Deleuze's fascination with theological themes and shows how his entire corpus can be understood as a creative atheist machine that liberates thinking, acting and feeling. Shults also demonstrates how the flow of a productive atheism can be increased by bringing Deleuzian concepts into dialogue with insights derived from the bio-cultural sciences of religion.

Gilles Deleuze consistently hammered away at icons, overturning pretentious images taken as true copies of ideal models. He was particularly critical of religious Figures. In What is Philosophy? Deleuze argued that religion and transcendence, like philosophy and immanence, always come (and go) together. What value, then, could he possibly have found in engaging theology, which is typically bound to a particular religious coalition? Chipping away at repressive religious representations was valuable in itself for Deleuze, but he also believed that religion produced something of considerable value. He insisted that every religion secretes atheism, and none more so than Christianity.

Deleuze as Theologian
By Wayne
Shults gives us a very helpful tool to help evaluate religion in the context of Deleuzian "theology" in what he calls the "bio-cultural study of religion, " which claims that "religious phenomena can be explained by the evolution of cognitive processes [Attributions] that over-detect human-like forms and coalitional process [Social] that over-protect socially inscribed norms."

Shults gives us a 2x2 matrix of (in my terms) Open or Closed versus Attribution (cognitive) or Social (coalitional) to help evaluate religious phenomena. He calls the Open-Attribution category Anthropomorphic Promiscuity (readiness to ascribe intentionality to unknown causes) versus the Closed-Attribution category Anthropomorphic Prudery (suspicious about ascribing intentionality to unknown causes.

He calls the Open-Social category Sociographic Promiscuity (open to out-groups and flexible about alternative normativities versus Closed-Social category he terms Sociographic Prudery (closed to out-groups, strict normativity with in-group).

Shults claims that evolutionary forces have favored Anthropomorphic Promiscuity (Open-Attribution) in being able to quickly detect relevant agents in the natural environment, and also favors Sociographic Prudery (Closed-Social) to adequately protect one's own group from dissolution. This combined integration of Anthropomorthic Promiscuity plus Sociographic Prudery yields Theogonic (god-bearing) forces and Sacerdotal theology (strict) which creates in religion strong in-group coalitions and strong belief in a very transcendental God.

The basis for this assessment is to contrast what Deleuze is advocating, which is Sociographic Promiscuity (Open-Social) combined with Anthropomorphic Prudery (Closed-Attribution) yielding Theolytic (god-dissolving) forces and Iconoclastic theology (creative) which creates in religion openness to out groups, flexible normativity and suspicion of attributing intentionality to unknown causes.

Shults hammers these categories and forces throughout as a tool to compare and contrast Deleuzian "theology" with confessional and conservative theology, and I think it is one of the strongest accomplishments of his project.

He defines religion broadly to designate "shared imaginative engagement with axiologically [regarding values, ethics, morals] relevant supernatural agents" and refers to the supernatural Agent (God) as "transcendent moralistic Entity" in order to relate to Deleuze.

This book is fundamentally an exposition of Deleuze's "transcendental [not transcendent] conditions for the real experience of creating new values" (p. 15), combined with the bio-cultural understanding of religion in order to "unveil and weaken the power of the Theogonic forces of anthropomorphic promiscuity (Open-Attribution) and Sociographic Prudery (Closed-Social), [and] open up new creative possibilities for theology." (p. 14).

Then Shults reviews three major influences on Deleuzian "theology" in the second chapter entitled "Breaking Theological Icons:" Kant and the Genitality [genesis] of Experience, Spinoza and the Vertigo of Immanence, Nietzsche and the Rising of the Simulacra [only difference eternally returns].
In the section "Overturning Religious Figures" Shults relates Deleuze's point that "Only friends can set out a plane of immanence as a ground from which idols have been cleared," and that the Figure of Christ has become an Idol which needs to be overturned.

Thought itself becomes subject to idols and must be free from the "Dogmatic [Idolizing] Image of Thought" outlined in the section of chapter three, "Loosening Theological Chains." Shults eloquently presents Porphery's Tree (Aristotle's logical categories) as the rigid structure of the Same which Deleuze is trying to break down into Difference alone, represented by the rhizomatic (non arboreal) flux of life. Theologically Porphery's tree represents the boxes sacerdotal theologians have been rigidly trying to put Christ into, rather than remaining open to the problem of the finite in the infinite via Iconoclastic theology.

In the "Christ as Logos" section, Shults covers issues raised by the Council of Chalcedon, showing how neo-Platonic [Idealizing] efforts to install Christ as Logos was met by appeals to mystery over the centuries.

Back to Porphery's Tree, Deleuze warns us of four rigidifying, illogical errors of thought: from the top of the tree down--(1) Analogy of Judgment (God is like Christ who mediates), (2) Identity of Concept (Christ as the Same as God), (3) Opposition of Predicates (Christ as union of divine and human properties), (4) Resemblance in Perception (Christ is similar in quality with God).

Chapter four, "Releasing Theological Events" takes us fully into the Deluzian rabbit hole of his "Logic and Sense, " definitely the deep end of the pool: Paradox and Becoming, Christ as the Incarnation of God [versus pure becoming], The Aleatory Point [pure becoming], The Line of Aion [vs Chronos], The Metaphysical Surface, Sexuality and Pious Intentions, The Liberation of Acting.

Now on to Deleuze's "Anti-Oedipus" and "A Thousand Plateaus" in chapter five where we run into Desiring-Machines, Christ as the Judgment of God, Theology and the Territorial Machine, Theology and the Despotic Machine, Theology and the Capitalist Machine, and the exciting Theology and the War Machine, and Liberation of Feeling. "It is actually our judgments themselves, our representations of other beings (or ourselves) as valuable based on external, idealized criteria, that block creativity and restrict life, separating us from what it [our will] can do" says Shults (p. 182).

Shults has brought the political in play through the screen of the above outlined sociological and cognitive processes which parallel the theological. Thus, the combination of Sociographic Promiscuity (Open-Social) and Anthropomorphic Prudery (Closed-Attribution) produce what is consistent with Deleuze's War Machine, the nomadic and the revolutionary, which parallels the theolytic (versus theogonic, despotic) forces of immanence.

We finally get to the last chapter with the enigmatic title "Secreting Atheism," the underlying core concept throughout this project, which sounds more like an oozy alien than an intriguing theological/philosophical concept. So I will insert my own analogy here, taking from a Heraclitian concept of the nature of reality being more like two heavyweight wrestlers standing, locked in each other's grip: Atheism versus Theism, both giving rise to the meaning of the other. For bringing this great battle to us while examining our very philosophical, theological and religious foundations, I enthusiastically congratulate Shults.

Simba and Nala At Play: A Book About Opposites (Baby's First Disney Books)
By Anna M. Ligtenberg
ISBN 999903019X Simba and Nala At Play: A Book About Opposites (Baby's First Disney Books) - Printed in Mexico. Age range not stated. Disney's the Lion King characters; from the Baby's First Disney Books series.

Simba and Nala both want to play, but they don't want to play the same game. Simba wins and they play do-the-opposite. Whatever Nala does, Simba does the opposite; when Nala ducks under, Simba jumps over, etc. In the end, Nala finds that she's enjoyed playing Simba's game, while Simba wishes they'd played Nala's game!

There is no author or illustrator listed on the book. The pages are sturdy board which are easier for small fingers to manipulate and will stand up to much abuse, while the glossy pages have the added bonus of wiping clean easily. The text is simple, with the "opposite" words in bold. Beginning readers should have an easy time with the words and even pre-readers will be able to learn opposites. The illustrations are fantastic, covering almost the entirety of every page, leaving just enough space for the text. They're bright and colorful, and have limited - but fun - details. An engaging way to learn something with characters that kids know and love.

Excellent book, but do not buy the Kindle edition
By tagger9
This is the newest version of the classic Ilford Manual of Photography line, and is substantially updated over the previous version to include more coverage of digital photography.

This is an excellent book giving a detailed and technical look at all aspects of photography including lenses, optics, lighting, sensors and digital processing. The book is well written, and complex topics are clearly explained. All major topics in technical photography are covered at a reasonable depth. It is fairly technical with a lot of math in some places. The math is actually useful, not just there to impress.

If you want to move away from general photography books and get a feel for what's under the hood, so to speak, then this is a great book. Its the best single source for the technical side of photography that I know of.

A word of warning: the Kindle edition has very poor quality. Color is non-existent or poorly rendered, and the equations are barely readable. Many of the graphs are also poor quality. This is on a PC Kindle, on a regular handheld Kindle it would be even worse. I returned the Kindle book for a refund and will buy the print version. The quality of the print version is very good.

Authors - thanks for writing such a great book, but you should insist that Amazon improve the quality of your Kindle book.

Amazon - Kindle books are a great idea, but technical books in Kindle format are often very low quality. You should aim for at least PDF quality.

I highly recommend anyone involved in digital cameras to read this book
By Tom Osborne
This book is intended for those wanting a clear technical overview of all aspects of digital cameras. It starts with the topic of Light Theory, which is normally viewed as a complicated subject. The topic is well written and readily understandable. The same is true for all other topics. The range of topics including the human visual system, color science, optics, Fourier analysis, image sensors, system processing blocks within the camera system, displays, and introduction to spatial image processing. It is ideal for engineers interested in any aspect of digital cameras from optics, sensors, to algorithm development. I highly recommend anyone involved in digital cameras to read this book. It serves as introduction for those starting their career and a reference for those involved in developing any aspect of digital cameras.

One of the BEST photography text book, reference book in the world!
By Irving
One of the BEST photography text book, reference book in the world!

It may not be suitable for every photographer, and surely not suitable for starters.
However, it is one of the best photography text book, reference book in the world.
Any serious professional photographer, and photography teacher should have one on their bookshelves.

If you have interest in film photography, then I think you may need to buy the previous version also.

Thanks for the authors!

A riveting, action-packed, post-apocalyptic survival story from a master of SF

When your life is based on lies, how do you hunt down the truth? Jerry Beche should be dead. Instead, he's rescued from a desolate Earth where he was the last man alive. He's then trained for the toughest conditions imaginable and placed with a crack team of specialists on an isolated island. Every one of them is a survivor, as each withstood the violent ending of their own alternate Earth. And their new specialism? To retrieve weapons and data in missions to other apocalyptic versions of our world. But what is "the Authority," the shadowy organization that rescued Beche and his fellow survivors? How does it access timelines to find other Earths? And why does it need these instruments of death? As Jerry struggles to obey his new masters, he begins to distrust his new companions. A strange bunch, their motivations are less than clear, and accidents start plaguing their missions. Jerry suspects the Authority is feeding them lies, and team members are spying on him. As a dangerous situation spirals into catastrophe, is there anybody he can trust?

a bit disappointing (weak four), but I'd be interested in a follow up
By B. Capossere
I was really looking forward to Gary Gibson's Extinction Game, as it combines two of my favorite concepts: parallel universes and post-apocalyptic settings. But while I found it a generally pleasant read, I'd be lying if I didn't admit it was a bit disappointing, perhaps because of those high expectations.

The premise is so great I'm shocked that it hasn't actually been done before. Jerry Beche, one of the few survivors of an extinction-level, planet-wide plague, hasn't seen a person for years., so he is understandably surprised when he finds a set of footprints outside his home. He is even more shocked when the people those prints belong to abduct him and then explain they are from a parallel universe Earth that has also suffered its own extinction event. Even better, they work for a mysterious entity (is there any other kind of entity?) called The Authority, which is overseeing a kind of exploratory salvage mission through a series of post-apocalyptic Earths. Of course, being a "mysterious entity," hints soon crop up that the Authority might not be as benevolent as they want to seem, and and is in fact holding back some crucial information from their "Pathfinders," the group of explorers Jerry becomes a member of. It also turns out that some of what the Authority is hiding might have a more personal connection to Jerry.

In many ways, then, Extinction Game, is less a post-apocalyptic novel than a conspiracy/murder investigation novel. That isn't to say we don't see a decent number of end-of-the-world scenarios, some of which are more original/interesting than others, including an asteroid strike (which actually becomes a tourist event by visitors from the Authority's Earth, a nuclear war, a rogue brown star (one of my favorites), and an engineered virus that left one Earth filled with strange bee-human hybrids (one of the most original and another personal favorite).

The plot is solid, though I'd say large parts are pretty predictable. Gibson makes no bones about the Authority having some ulterior motives, but I wish they'd been a bit more surprising. Jerry's more personal mystery has an underlying premise I liked quite a bit (I'm avoiding spoilers here), but its resolution felt somewhat flat. The novel kept my attention for the most part, but unfortunately its weakest section came toward the end, where it devolved into too much talking, with too much plot being revealed not by action, but by second and even third-hand accounts through dialogue. And worse, dialogue that was more summary than anything else. I'd also say the plot was harmed by one of my personal pet peeves--people just not talking to one another (at one point, I wrote as a note, "Just tell them!").

Gibson does a better job with the characters and their inter-relationships. Jerry especially is sharply formed, starting off with his introduction as a man nearly driven insane by loneliness (he spends a lot of early time talking to his dead wife). His Pathfinder mentor, Nadia, is also a strong character, and I liked his relationship with her quite a bit. I also thought Gibson did a good job presenting a diversity of characters, not just in the usual sense (racial, sexual), but also in the varied responses to the end of the world. On the downside, Jerry does fall a bit too quickly into a romantic relationship for my liking (to be fair, there is an explanation for this), and I wished for a stronger, better defined villain.

The prose style was solid; if it wasn't noticeable for any particular richness or lyricism, than it also didn't distract for worse reasons. And if Extinction Game didn't quite meet my hopes for some wildly inventive and richly detailed apocalypse-Earths, Gibson has left himself open to revisiting this group of people and this universe (s). I'd like to see what he might do with a follow-up.

An unexpectedly low energy affair
By Tghu Verd
I've enjoyed all of Gibson's previous novels but this was a drab effort, lacking pace of plot, interesting characterization or even particularly challenging ideas. Indeed, the challenge I had was finishing it, so dreary was the mid-section of the novel. I was so disengaged that even though it's his "latest" novel, the lack of composure compared to those prior novels made me wonder whether it's an earlier work that has been dusted off and published on the back of his success.

Whether that's the case or not, "Extinction Game" is essentially a POV thriller based on the premise that a shadowy "Authority" plucks the literal 'last man standing' from parallel Earth's that suffered some kind of global disaster and appoints them to a search and rescue team hitting up other apocalyptic Earth's from the apparently infinite multiverse. Add in hints of internecine politics within the Authority, a complete lack of "Why" any of this is happening plus the forced teamwork of a half dozen sole survivors, and Gibson sets the scene for what could be an interesting and complex sci-fi thriller.

Instead, and despite a great opening sequence, it's almost drab. I feel that this stems from Gibson adopting that first-person viewpoint and especially because our protagonist, Jerry Beche, was not particularly engaging or likable for my taste. Gibson keeps him passive for at least half the novel and I find it difficult to really care when the main character fails to deliver much in the way of oomph to situations. By the time his dander is up and he starts punching above his weight, it was too late for me, I was by then merely plodding through to see what the story was about.

Plus, the situations are pretty lackluster. Channeling our viewpoint through Jerry limits the tension. Sure, Jerry can surmise what the others are feeling, but that is not the same as being in their heads. Which was a shame because those hints of politics could have really ratcheted things up if we were privy to them rather than riding along with Jerry. In a similar vein, most of the parallel worlds that Jerry visits are used as the set up for the mystery, rather than triggers for the mystery. It seems a minor point of difference but in terms of plot tension and the inherent mechanics of a mystery thriller, it is a crucial difference and the sad fact is that you could strip out pretty much all of the multiverse day trips and it would not collapse the heart of the story.

Finally, there was the science. Gibson typically skates pretty quickly over the 'how things work' aspect of his universes, but it seemed the ice was particularly thin in "Extinction Game". There are a few explanations later in the novel for some of the aspects of Jerry et al's hops between worlds, but for the most part I was left pondering things large and small. Gibson has written a few novels in a series - think the "The Shoal Sequence - so perhaps he'll continue Jerry's journey in a sequel, but I won't be buying it.

So, for me, this was not a comparable effort to his other work. It's expensive, I found it sadly wooden in execution, and there wasn't really a point that I could find. Two stars and no recommendation that you purchase it, it's certainly not the outcome I expected when it hit my Kindle!

Interesting tale in a new world(s)
By Matt Grafton
I read an exert of this book on Tor.com and was intrigued enough to buy it.

I really liked the set up of the dystopian alternate realities and the Author was able
to play around with them in interesting ways. The characters were somewhat text book
but the main character was interesting and the way his background is revealed is well
paced.
There are a few rather large info dump chapters that I think could have been
handled a little smoother. One chapter that is handled well is a flash back while there
were a couple later on that were just characters spewing exposition at each other.
The plot twists were pretty well handled and although they were not super original
they worked out pretty well.
There are some plot threads left hanging for sequels but it is a complete story. I was
glad to not be left with a cliffhanger ending.

The Nightmare Before Christmas: 20th Anniversary Edition, by Tim Burton

In this beloved picture book that could only come from the visionary mind of author and illustrator TIM BURTON, we meet Jack Skellington-- a well-intentioned inhabitant of Halloweenland. Jack is bored of "the scaring, the terror, the fright....tired of being something that goes bump in the night". And so, in an effort to bring to joy to his town, Jack kidnaps Santa and takes his place as the jolly old elf. But instead of bringing joy to the world Jack, who is a little more than a grinning skeleton, brings fear by delivering creepy toys and riding a sleigh carried by skeletal reindeer. Only through a number of things going horribly wrong does Jack learn the true meaning of Christmas.

Gr. 3-5. Expect to hear this title a lot around Christmastime. Burton, the author, is also Burton, the filmmaker (Beetlejuice, Batman), and this is the picture-book version of his new holiday movie. According to a companion adult volume, Tim Burton's Nightmare before Christmas: The Film, the Art, the Vision, reviewed in this issue's Upfront section, Burton has used an innovative stop-motion process to animate the movie. Maybe the story will work better as a movie than it does as a picture book. It stars Jack Skellington, Halloween's most famous figure. He concludes that Halloween's a drag, and after literally falling into Christmas Town, decides to shove Santa into a sack and trade places with him. This leads to such lines as "And what to their wondering eyes should appear / But a coffin sleigh with skeleton deer. / And a skeletal driver so ugly and sick / They knew in a moment, this can't be St. Nick." At least these lines scan better than some of the stanzas in the rhyming text. It's not clear who the audience for this is. The art is macabre and likely to scare little ones, especially those who still believe in Santa. Older kids may find the book amusing in a gross kind of way, but if they've seen the film, these illustrations aren't going to hold their interest. Libraries might want to consider purchase if the film's a holiday hit, but to be on the safe side, wait and see if the movie is big box office--and whether that translates into requests. A Movie Sure to Become a Cherished Family Classic
By A Customer
I bought a copy of this book a couple years back, only to find my young nephew (only 5 back then) reaching to look at it often when he visited. I've now decided to buy him his own copy of this book, while it's still in print, because I see this movie's "legend" continuing to grow as an annual Halloween classic. Such is the unique and wonderful world of Tim Burton; his style often does not catch on immediately, but it slowly finds its way beyond "cult" viewing and into the hearts and minds of mainstream audiences. This book features a generous offering of pre-production designs (including many of Burton's own drawings) and behind-the-scenes photos, which are fun to look at again and again. A beautifully illustrated book, and fun to own

Beautifully illustrated , melancholy, spooky, charming and FUN!!!!
By ModernOrchid
I was lucky to find this at Borders a couple of days ago. My 5 and 3 year olds love it and so do I! It is a shorter version of the movie, thus NO Sally, or Oogie Boogie in the plot. However, they do make an appearance as citizens of Halloween Town. It is in a rhyming verse and this adds to it's charm , one of my fave lines is

"He visted the house of Susie and Dave;

They got a Gumby and Pokey from the grave.

Then on to the home of little Jane Neeman;

She got a baby doll possessed by a demon.""

There is also a spooky parody of "T'was the night before christmas" and Zero as Rudolph, of course. I look forward to reading this book at bedtime or anytime because it is such fun!

Very illustrative...
By R.Suarez
This book is definitely very illustrative about the process of creation of a film of the caliber of `The nightmare before Christmas'. With a foreword by Tim Burton, the book includes everything related with the making of this stop-motion animation classic. This book is more a documentary about the making of the film; it is divided in three sections (described below) and takes you through the whole process of creation of the movie. It is an interesting document indeed for people wanting to know about the creative process of making a movie of this kind. A perfect companion for the film!

The Film

The first part of the book focuses on the story ans the lyrics of the movie songs, beautifully illustrated with pictures from the movie, designs and Burton's sketches. Some movie facts are also given in this part of the book.

The Art

The original poem by Burton in which the movie is based on is presented in the firt part of the section. Most of Burton's sketches and character designs are here. The design of the sets, the characters and storyboards are well explained and presented in this section of the book with beautiful pictures, colored sketches and original drawings by Tim.

The Vision

In this section we get to meet all the people involved in making this film possible, and a little background on her profiles and how they were selected to partake on this project. Tim Burton, Henry Selick, Danny Elfman, Caroline Thompson, Kathleen Gavin and Denise Di Novi participate with comments and thought about the project.

Understanding Geometric Algebra: Hamilton, Grassmann, and Clifford for Computer Vision and Graphics, by Kenichi Kanatani

Understanding Geometric Algebra: Hamilton, Grassmann, and Clifford for Computer Vision and Graphics introduces geometric algebra with an emphasis on the background mathematics of Hamilton, Grassmann, and Clifford. It shows how to describe and compute geometry for 3D modeling applications in computer graphics and computer vision.

Unlike similar texts, this book first gives separate descriptions of the various algebras and then explains how they are combined to define the field of geometric algebra. It starts with 3D Euclidean geometry along with discussions as to how the descriptions of geometry could be altered if using a non-orthogonal (oblique) coordinate system. The text focuses on Hamilton’s quaternion algebra, Grassmann’s outer product algebra, and Clifford algebra that underlies the mathematical structure of geometric algebra. It also presents points and lines in 3D as objects in 4D in the projective geometry framework; explores conformal geometry in 5D, which is the main ingredient of geometric algebra; and delves into the mathematical analysis of camera imaging geometry involving circles and spheres.

With useful historical notes and exercises, this book gives readers insight into the mathematical theories behind complicated geometric computations. It helps readers understand the foundation of today’s geometric algebra.

Superbly written introduction to geometric algebra
By Troy learns to design
I come from a differential geometry background (as an engineer) and the subject of Clifford algebra was not easy for me. I never get Porteous to work for me. Then I tried Lounesto, easier this time, but not everything is clearly defined (e.g. contraction, general terms for conjugation), and nor is conformal geometric algebra discussed. Besides, I think it is really meant to be a intro book for physicists.

Then I found this book written by Kenichi Kanatani. I can't complain about this book in any way (even the typos in the book are easily corrected). It establishes the modern notion of geometric algebra layer by layer, from Euclidean geometry, to Grassmann algebra, to Clifford algebra, to Grassmann-Cayley algebra (though the exact definition of shuffle product is missing), to conformal geometric algebra. With all due respects, Jon Selig's Geometric Fundamentals of Robotics cannot have achieved such a level of clarity.

The book is so well and smoothly written that the first reading of this book costs me only four days, mobilizing only the basic euclidean, projective geometry and tensor analysis I picked up when learning baby differential geometry (from say Boothby: An Introduction to Differentiable Manifolds and Riemannian Geometry). I could feel that the book is not written in a hurry, but instead is tested through some time. And therefore the quality of the book is superb.

Five stars for a Five-star book. Job well done, Kenichi Sensei.
