Great Gift!

I gave this book to my daughter's day care provider as a gift. She LOVED it. She said she is using it for her daily devotions. It is small enough to keep in a nightstand drawer, but it is also hardcover so it's sturdy for everyday use.

Standard Lucado, pretty light

I picked this up to use as a daily devotional, as I've used several of Lucado's books in small group studies and Sunday School classes. The content is pretty much standard Max Lucado, as the entries are all brief excerpts from several of his books.

Unfortunately for my purpose, the title is accurate in that these are pretty much inspirational thoughts; the entries are really too brief to function as the focus for a daily devotion. They are more like little pick-me-ups. I think this book would work better as a page-a-day calendar. It's not bad content, just didn't suit my purpose (and a lot of it was familiar from having read his books).

The book uses excerpts from: And the Angels Were Silent, Come Together and Worship, A Gentle Thunder, He Chose the Nails, In the Eye of the Storm, In the Grip of Grace, God Came Near, Just Like Jesus, No Wonder They Call Him the Savior, Six Hours One Friday, Traveling Light, and When Christ Comes.

It's Great to Start the Day With.

This book of inspirational thoughts is so great to start my day with. Reading it after waking up puts new direction in my thoughts for the day. It's so easy to start off the day with my own selfish thoughts. But with great direction from this book, I have the choice for something better. And being based from God's Word, there is no way you can go wrong. Way to go Max!

Cosmopolitan Manhattan of 2008 embraces a new breed of immigrant in this weird, fanciful tale of surgically enhanced, talking, bionic canines out on the town as they search for their history and place in the world. Conceived by 19th-century Prussian mad scientist Augustus Rank as an army of superior, fiercely loyal dog soldiers, the monster Pinschers, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Dobermans and other sturdy breeds became fully empowered only many years after his death. Rank's followers, secluded in a remote Canadian village, continued his work, ultimately developing a race of super-intelligent, longer-living dogs trained from birth to use surgically attached mechanical hands, speak fluent German via a mechanical voice box, walk erect and dress in the elegant human fashions of the 1880s. NYU student Cleo Pira develops friendships with a few of the dogs in New York and becomes their liaison to the human press, writing insider articles for Vanity Fair and other chic magazines. Cleo narrates the novel, incorporating excerpts from the papers of Ludwig Von Sacher, the dogs' historian. First-novelist Bakis holds the reader in thrall for much of her imaginative tale, but, disappointingly, the dogs never emerge as strong characters. Though the reader gains some understanding of Ludwig through his writing, Cleo's conversations with the dogs are uniformly abrupt and anti-climactic. Instead, Bakis offers more of a dream vision that, ultimately, might be all in Cleo's head. Fortunately, that vision is engaging in its own right and, through Bakis's storytelling skill, makes for an audacious, intriguing and ultimately haunting debut.

Misplaced Focus Undoes a Promising Story

Lives of the Monster Dogs is essentially two books. Ludwig von Sacher's story speaks of the past, of assorted documents and blanks that even the desperate German Shepherd and historian can't fill in. Cleo Pira's story is that of a young, aimless woman who becomes almost subconsciously involved in the world of this race of monster dogs that literally appear right out of nowhere in modern-day New York. These two stories interweave throughout this interesting, poetic novel.

Meeting in the present day New York (2008, when apparently laser guns were supposed to have become pretty common), Cleo and Ludwig meet and form an odd yet somehow enduring friendship. Cleo finds herself caught up in the sad story of these dogs, created by a mad German scientist named Augustus Rank in a hidden town in Canada for the intention of combat. But because the process took more than a century, he died long before the dogs were perfected and as such they have no purpose. Having rebelled against their masters, they roamed the Canadian wilderness until they decided to enter New York. Though they are well-received, the dogs' story is becoming ever shorter, and Cleo is taken for the final ride.

Bakis has a real talent at presenting a story in an interesting way. In this book alone we experience many different ways of looking at things - matter-of-factly, dream-like or in some unspeakable void between the two. Which, oddly, is where we hit the book's principle problem - the plot is drowned by the very poetic and colourful prose. Where we hit the present day, events are explained matter-of-factly, yet feelings and states-of-mind draw the reader in. The reader hardly believes what's happening, because it doesn't feel as though the book tries to.

It's very easy for me to lash out against this novel for its obvious flaws and yet equally easy for me to go into full defence and to not hear anything against it. This story is interesting, has a lot of depth to it, but half of it is in the hands of a character more obsessed by her own problems than with the story the reader is waiting to hear. There is a lot of dialogue that serves no real purpose. When something does happen, it's easy to miss because the reader is immersed in the almost psychological prose. This makes the book very interesting but also very frustrating.

My favourite parts of the book are in the hands of Ludwig. First, the diary entries of Mops Hacker, who invented a particular Roman-numeral diary system despite his grammar not being the best. Yet even that pales in comparison to a section in the closing segments of the book, in letters Ludwig sends to Cleo. These letters are indescribable ponderings about existence and the undercurrents of life. As I read these, I can't help but be amazed at Bakis's talent at drawing out unforgettable imagery. It's just a shame that the rest of the book, with the plot and the tragic end of the story of the dogs, isn't done as much justice. Characters that emit a lot of warmth such as Luitpold leave me with big regret that we don't get to delve deeper into them, because we barely do. I never really perceive the bond these characters are supposed to share. A lot of things happen around Cleo, and the reader even picks it up, yet something about the way we see it through her eyes makes it a frustrating ride - like being on a roller coaster where the dives are in all the wrong places.

Make no mistake, Lives of the Monster Dogs is an unforgettable book. Just the cover - that of Luitpold, drawn by Bakis herself - drew me in when I glanced it at my local library. The story is sad, enthralling and sometimes grotesque. What I am left with upon finishing the book is that I have only touched the surface; that I was watching a movie that I somehow forgot to pay attention to. Put more bluntly, I feel a sense of anticlimax. Lives of the Monster Dogs is more a piece of art than a novel.

Beautifully written, great premise, but disappointing.

If this book had a better plot, I would have given it a ten. What an amazing idea for a novel, and so compellingly executed for the first three-quarters of the book. The author's writing style, creativity, and competence are remarkable. The opera staged by the dogs to illustrate their history was astoundingly clever, almost worth the price of the book by itself. But I should have stopped reading after that. By the end, the story had lost most of its momentum and seemed ultimately pointless. In this regard it reminded me of The Secret History (a bestseller several years ago, by Donna Tartt, also a young first-time novelist). I hope Bakis writes more novels; if she does, I suspect her next one will be sensational

A highly original debut novel

For a first novel, Kirsten Bakis proves to be an assured craftsman. This is especially true considering how original her concept is. This is a hard novel to classify - it is not just a horror novel, or a science fiction novel, or an allegory. It is all those things and more, creating a truly unique dreamlike vision. The best parts of her novel is how well Bakis leads us into her world and how convincing she makes her talking dogs think and act. The opera libretto and the politics behind the dogs are quite good. The weakest part is the finale, where too much happens too fast (the fate of her friend Ludwig, the castle party, etc.) Still, this is a highly readable, thought provoking debut effort.

I used this book while taking a basic phlebotmy class in the summer of 2007. While it got the job done, I found the information to be poorly organized. The chapters are not well put together and there are too many of those little "information" boxes everywhere. I thought the book was confusing. I now have one called Phlebotomy Essentials by Ruth McCall (which my school went back to after only one semester of using the other one) and it is much better. It even has an optional workbook. Hope this helps.

Homestyle Japanese cooking demystified

Debra Samuels, a longtime resident of Japan, demystifies Japanese homestyle cooking in "My Japanese Table." Included are such favorites as sushi (including hand-rolled sushi and chirashi-zushi), skewers (grilled mixed veggie and tofu, chicken), donburi (one-dish meat and rice bowls), okonomiyaki (cabbage and egg "pancakes"), and a whole chapter devoted to bento, ornate Japanese lunchboxes prepared according to a strict balance of colors, flavors, and ingredients. I liked the photos of Debra's chrysanthemum bento box so much that I ordered an identical one from Japan!

"My Japanese Table" is a perfect starting point if you're new to Japanese cooking; it's not as intimidating or complicated as other Japanese cookbooks, and it uses commonplace American supermarket ingredients whenever possible. The vibrant photography and clear font make it especially easy to read and cook with. The thorough intro on Japanese cuisine includes the handy mnemonic device of "sa shi su se so" (the Japanese hiragana letters that correspond to sugar, salt, vinegar, soy sauce, and miso, the staples of the Japanese kitchen). And kudos for a particularly helpful section on Japanese ingredients with clearly labeled photos to match. There is also a handy bibliography and list of shopping resources (mostly online).

Like Tuttle Publishing's other Asian cookbooks, "My Japanese Table" is designed to fit today's busy lifestyle and includes many main-course recipes that take 30 minutes or less to cook using common (U.S.) supermarket ingredients (both the prep times and cooking times are helpfully included at the top of each recipe). Another bonus is that measurements are given both in metric and imperial measurements; no need to convert if you're cooking overseas.

I just spent six months working in (and cooking my way across) Japan, so I was really looking forward to testing these recipes. First up were the colorful matcha mochi cupcakes. Mochi are sticky pounded rice cakes (no relation to American "rice cakes") traditionally served at New Year's, but variations of mochi are found in many common Japanese desserts. I made the cupcakes as instructed and sprinkled cinnamon on top, but they still needed a little something extra, so I added the matcha frosting from Baked: New Frontiers in Baking. This gave the cupcakes an extra boost of grassy green tea flavor (and color) with a touch of sweetness (see attached photos).

Next up, I tried several of the vegetarian recipes like the Sweet Simmered Mushrooms, Pumpkin Rounds and Japanese Mushroom Mélange with Butter and Soy. In some cases, I found that I had to adjust the cooking time. In the case of the mushroom mélange, you're instructed to bake 2 pounds of mushrooms for 15 minutes (the cooking time at the top said 20), but I had to bake them for closer to 30 before the mushrooms released their juices. Also, it was difficult to fit two pounds of mushrooms into a 10 x 13 piece of parchment paper as instructed!

I was happy to see that some traditional Japanese desserts were included, mostly focused on mochi, anko (sweet red bean paste), and green tea. You'll find favorites like ichigo daifuku (ripe strawberries wrapped in a layer of bean paste and coated in mochi) and matcha and black sesame ice creams. The chapter is rounded out with instructions on how to prepare several kinds of traditional teas (sencha, matcha, and hojicha).

Debra is a patient teacher (Tuttle has dubbed her "The Julia Child of Japanese cooking") and frequently defers to Japanese colleagues, or includes stories of her life in Japan that makes "My Japanese Table" part cookbook and part travelogue. The book could have benefited from a little extra proofreading (there were several typos in addition to mismatches between stated cooking times, conflicting instructions, etc.), but overall "My Japanese Table" has something to appeal to everyone, from the meat-and-potatoes crowd to vegetarians to kids (there are several cute bento box suggestions aimed specifically at kids and teens).

Great intro to cooking Japanese food

I really enjoyed this book. It was a great combination of her memories and simple versions of Japanese food. I was particularly happy to find a recipe for Black Sesame Seed Pudding--I'd eaten some in Japan, but didn't know what it was. When I saw the recipe, I realized what it had to be. The recipe was easy to follow, too. I also made okinomiaki and they were delicious--just like the ones I had in Japan. The bento section was very helpful, too.
My only problem was, my version is on my Kindle, which is not the best to cook from. A paper copy would be better to bring into the kitchen.

Great recipes and a great read

Debra Samuels' "My Japanese Table" is the first book I've found that approaches the art of Japanese cooking in a way to which I can relate. Her stories about her experiences in Japan could have happened to me. I am Japanese American, but my knowledge of Japanese customs, cooking, and way of life date back to the 1920s when my father immigrated to the US. Today, Japan is a very different place.

Samuels' book gives us a modern Japanese approach to traditional Japanese cooking. The flavors and tastes remind me of my mother's cooking, but without all that work. I was especially happy to find recipes for some of my favorites: Gyoza (Japanese Pot Stickers), Kara-age (Japanese Fried Chicken), and rice bowls and noodles with different toppings. Her clear and easy to follow instructions have opened up a new way for me to approach sushi, a dish that was always too much work and we made it only once a year for our New Year celebration.

I was so impressed with "My Japanese Table" that it was my Christmas present to all members of the next generation of my family, nephews, nieces, cousins, etc. I would recommend this book at anyone who loves Japanese food!
