When Brontorina Apatosaurus appears at the door of Madame Lucille's Dance Academy for Boys and Girls, she faces what could be sure rejection. Young Clara and Jack tug at Madame to accept her, while naysayers jeer at her lack of proper shoes. Finally, Madame admits Brontorina, and humorous scenes show little boys and girls doing arabesques, relevés, and jetés, while enormous Brontorina gracefully crashes into the ceiling. Madame concludes that the new pupil is just too big. Brontorina turns to leave, a dinosaur-size tear falling from her eye. Then the teacher has a realization: The problem is not that you are too big. The problem is that my studio is too small, and the academy gets relocated and renamed. A quiet fusion of pathos, comedy, and passion is echoed in the painterly, softly textured, muted oil illustrations. The final picture of the orange dinosaur perched like a bird atop a dancing triceratops, silhouetted against the setting sun, is priceless. *Starred Review* Initially turned away from Madame Lucille's Dance Academy for Boys and Girls because she is an enormous dinosaur, Brontorina counters, “But in my heart I am a ballerina.” Moved by Brontorina's dream, Madame Lucille welcomes her to the class with a request that she not “squash the other dancers.” Soon her relevés and jetés leave dents and grooves in the ceiling, but if she suffers for her art, she never complains. When Brontorina's size limits her horizons, Madame Lucille changes her own assumptions (as well as her studio). Her broad-minded approach opens up a range of new possibilities. Text and illustrations work beautifully together in this witty fantasy. Though in lesser hands the plot might have seemed tired, here speech balloons alternate with narration to tell the story in a fresh, droll manner. In Cecil's arresting oil paintings, the tawny orange dinosaur stands out boldly against slate blue or white backgrounds, and the unusual texture of the paint creates a distinctive effect. Brontorina makes a hugely sympathetic heroine as pictured here, and the stylized figures of her teacher and classmates are no less appealing. Brontorina covers acceptance, rejection, being yourself, differences, and following your dreams quite beautifully. When Brontorina enters Madame Lucille's Dance Academy she is met with warmth and curiosity. But she's also met with a little bit of an attitude by two girls who just can't seem to find anything nice to say. It's like they want her to fail. They have a very minor role but I pointed out their put-downs. A kiddo said, "They are trying to stand in front of her dream!" Luckily, there are two other dancers, Clara and Jack, who want nothing more then to help her succeed. We need to lift each other up - not cut each other down. This was a well received message thanks to Brontorina. Major kudos to the author for picking a dinosaur to be a ballerina. This kept both boys and girls engaged. The last illustration got a heartwarming "AHHHHHH" from all the students. Oh, and from me too! As an elementary school counselor, it's refreshing to find books like Brontorina.

Fun story with a great lesson

I loved this story! Brontorina Apatosaurus is a dinosaur who just has to dance. After all,she has the name of a ballerina doesn't she? I loved Madame Lucille's attitude of acceptance and Brontorina's steadfast refusal to give up on her dream. I even liked the snarky girls on the sidelines that kept commenting on how she didn't have the right shoes. The illustrations are simple and adorable, giving Brontorina just the perfect amount of innocence and charm that will have every reader rooting for her. The ending, which shows just how far Madame Lucille was willing to go to make sure that Brontorina could dance, is a testament to inclusiveness. In the end, she even gets the right shoes. This is a perfect choice for preschool and kindergarten groups as a read aloud, and can be used effectively to promote discussions about acceptance. Recommended

This one will be a classic!

I came across this book while looking for other books Randy Cecil has illustrated (we loved his 'We've all got belly buttons'). This is my 21 month old's favorite book. Granted, this is for older children but my daughter enjoys being read to and loves the emotion in this book. As a parent reading the book to her (many times a day) I'm nowhere near being sick of the book; Randy Cecil's illustrations are beautiful and James Howe's text is just enough, so we hover on each page talking about what else is going on.
I hope this book will teach my daughter acceptance of people no matter their differences and the determination to hold on to her dreams. Can't recommend this book enough!

Definitely the HOTTEST Gerrard book I've read

First of all, do NOT read this one in public if there is a chance that someone could be reading over your shoulder. (I was trying to read it at a Cub Scout pack meeting and had to set it aside and bite my nails until I could get home and read in private.)
Holy hotness! It's a short read and yet they still get their happily ever after in a believable outcome. Thanks to Karyn Gerrard for my little Christmas present to myself. I'm one happy reader. :D

Unique, saucy fun. This story about a jaded Victorian male prostitute and his curious,intelligent female client is unlike anything I've read in the Romance genre. Lots of sexiness and characterization in a small package. Wonderful and slightly strange slice of life story that is very romantic at its heart. Well done.

A Good Survey of Protestantism and Society.

"Reformation and Society" begins as a study of the leaders and the reformation movements in countries like Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Scotland, and Britain to name a few.The Hussites, Thomas Cromwell, Stephen Gardiner, and William Tyndale are some of the notable sceptics of the papacy. Of course A.G. Dickens devotes more time to covering the better known trio of Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin.

The book examines some of the causes of the Reformation and the importance of universities and the printing press in fueling the reformation.

A look at the societies of Luther's Germany and other countries involved in varying degrees to the movement.

The influence that Thomas Wyttenbach had on Zwingli was interesting as was the failed attempt by Philip of Hesse to reconcile Luther and Zwingli. While the leaders of the Reformation had a common opponent in the Catholic church, their views were anything but universal.

The author descibed the different beliefs of various sects of Anabaptism and their suffering at the hands of both Catholics and Protestants.

"Reformation and Society" was a useful read on the Reformation and it's effects on a number of countries and societies. The squabbles over different viewpoints such as the view of communion in relation to Christ's physical body. Various views on spiritualism were also examined.
Overall an educational book well worth reading.

A Classic Account

A classic, secular recounting of events in 16th Century Europe. I had an old (45 years!) paperback version that fell apart when I re-read it recently. Was very pleased to find a hardcover, used edition to replace it in my library.
