QuickBooks was not made for churches, it was made for businesses. So many functions have business names that are opposite of how a church would look at it. Such as; church members are customers, member donations are called sales receipts, ect. So it is great that this book was written specifically for the church/non-profit application. I don't think I would have been able to work it out in my head without the book. Another book I bought just didn't make any sense. And it is well written with lots of screen pictures.

I am the treasurer at my church. I have had a QuickBooks college class and still found this book helpful. Church accounting has many accounting issues that I needed additional guidance on and this book was helpful. Even someone without an accounting background or any other QuickBooks training could navigate the software with this book.

Must Have Book for Churches

This book is a valuable reference book for all churches, especially those using QuickBooks. My copy is already dog-eared from using it so much. I have tabs and highlights all in it and consider it a priceless resource. It sits right beside my computer at all times. The first edition was great, but the addition of how to track payroll through the system without having to go through Intuit and other additions make this copy a MUST HAVE addition to any church office.

I took over for our previous Treasurer and things were just a mess and I didn't quite know what to do in QuickBooks.
Lisa's book has been a huge help. I decided to just start a new company in QuickBooks and have a fresh start. Her book took me thru the set up and her suggestions for the chart of accounts were excellent. I couldn't have done it without this book! If you're on the fence about getting it, trust me, this book is worth every penny. I'm so thankful that this book is out there. There was no other book that was specifically for churches using QuickBooks.

About the Author

Robert W. Kaps, a professor of aviation management in the Department of Aviation Management and Flight at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, has over thirty years of experience in labor and industrial relations, including work for a major airline.

 

J. Scott Hamilton is a professor of management at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and has practiced aviation law for over thirty years, including aviation labor relations; in government as assistant attorney general; and in aviation management as general counsel and chief operating officer.

Great for college

Received this when I was in school. Amazon rent is probably the best place to get the books you need. Grant it they do not have all the books you will need but most of them they will. I was even able to find some that my instructors said that I may have an issue finding. Amazon rent saved me a ton of money and I recommend it for any and everyone in school. If you are going to be a little late on your return they can extend your rental for a low fee with out having to buy the book at full cost returning the books are easy as well. This in itself should inspire folks to get out there and get their degree.

About the Author
Fred S. Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. He has taught the art history survey course for more than three decades, first at the University of Virginia and, since 1978, at Boston University, where he is currently professor of art history and archaeology. From 1985 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Long acclaimed for his inspiring lectures and dedication to students, Professor Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities in 2002, and he is a two-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. In 2007, he was elected fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and, in 2009, in recognition of lifetime achievement in publication and teaching, fellow of the Text and Academic Authors Association.

SHODDY IMAGES, for an art history textbook.

DO NOT BUY! This is an art history text, which for some would mean the images are arguably the most important part, and on this version they are absolute crap. Every image in this book is so contrasty you can't make out any of the subject matter in the mass of black the dark areas have become, and further, none of them are high enough quality to zoom your screen in on for a better look.
I've attached images of the painting used for the book's cover as it appears in the text, as an example of how dark and low resolution the images are.

I can't believe this is a textbook. No one can see anything the text describes in these terrible low resolution photographs. At these prices? And it's a requirement for the class. The publisher should be embarrassed.

I loved this book, It's great, and has so many of the chapters that I needed for my Art History Class. The only thing is that it's thick and it's quite heavy. But, other than that, it's exactly what I needed.

A book worth reading.

The author challenges the readers intellect and confounds the emotions in this intensely personal look at the life of Charlotte Bronte and her family. The book is hard to put down as the reader searches for some hint of a happy ending, even knowing as we do, how the story must end. This is not a child's book, nor a light book of romantic fiction. Path to Silent Country will entice you to turn back to the Misses Bronte's novels and other works and reread them with new insights and deeper understanding.

Good and necessary follow-up to the Dark Quartet. Hard to read of the deaths, but it portrayed all the heartache of Charlotte Bronte's life realistically and faithfully.

Poor editing

The subject is certainly interesting and I'm guessing the writing is good, but I find it impossible to go on reading this book. The editing is atrocious. There is the constant spell check problem, with the wrong word chosen instead of the correct spelling of the right word. However, this book adds a new editing problem. Suddenly in the middle of a sentence is a period, then the next word will be capitalized and the sentence continued. Simply too much trouble to bother with.

I finally read this excellent book!

Since this was a free Kindle download, I was prompted to finally read this classic book. It is much better than I expected it would be! Easy to read, well-written, and eye-opening. I noticed another reviewer said the download version was hard to read, but I did not find that to be a problem at all. One nice thing about the Kindle is the ability to download so many classics for free. I doubt I would go to the library and check out Uncle Tom's Cabin, but I would and did read it as a free Kindle download. I am glad that I did!

This is definitely the one to buy!

This version of Stowe's classic text includes reproductions of orginal historical documents at the back, literary criticism of the text, and some of the original illustrations. The book is well-made, stands up to the stress of reading (paper is thin but not too thin, like some anthologies).
As for the text-- this is the book that some say caused Abraham Lincoln to write the Emancipation Proclamation. An "Uncle Tom" has come to mean a black person who sells out to the white system-- but in so many ways, that is not at all what Uncle Tom does in the book. Stowe wrote the book to change what she saw as an unjust system, an evil system-- and at times, the text is very didactic (teacherly) and very preachy about religion. It's a fine "sentimental" book-- and a fine historical document. It's also a pretty good story. Yes, there are some places where we could just get a tooth ache from the syrup of the overly dramatized scenes (you'll see when you read about Little Eva). But it's a certain style of writing that accomplished Stowe's goal of getting the women who may not have owned slaves but who benefitted from the system (white, northern, wealthy ones) to realize the problems and move to CHANGE them.
Much of what people think about Uncle Tom's Cabin actually comes from the later "Tom shows" that travelled the country-- the minstrel reviews that were not very flattering either to blacks or to Stowe's original texts. Read the book that has everyone all stirred up and make your own judgements. You might not like it-- but don't let someone else make the decision for you.

Excellent Book for a Discussion Club

A few coworkers and I started an informal book discussion group, where we'd read a couple chapters then meet over breakfast or lunch to discuss. None of us had ever been in a discussion group before. We had a quite diverse set of viewpoints and backgrounds among us, and were looking for something that would be enjoyable to read, but also provide material for discussion and debate.

After a lot of searching and voting, we settled on Uncle Tom's Cabin as our first book. It ended up filling the bill perfectly.

Knowing that it's taught in many schools, I expected a heavy literary "masterpiece" full of symbolism and arcane references. Instead I found it to be a fast-moving, easy to read page turner, and almost all of us in the club tended to read far ahead of the "assignments" for our meetings because we couldn't put it down. Yet it also prompted some great discussion about morality, social and personal responsibility, identity, religion, etc. Mrs. Stowe does not simply convey that "slavery is bad." She explores the ways in which all Americans were complicit in the institution by "turning the other cheek;" by claiming not to approve yet investing financially in companies that relied on slavery for profit; simply by not speaking out against it or supporting those who did. Again, great topics for group discussion.

As a group we've read a half dozen other books since Uncle Tom's Cabin, but none have provided the same combination of simple enjoyment and fodder for good discussion.
