About the Author
Randy Ribay was born in the Philippines and raised in Michigan and Colorado. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he specialized in language and literacy. He is the English Department Chair at an all-boys high school in Philadelphia, a reviewer for The Horn Book, and a nerd-of-all-trades. Real.

One of my best friends let me borrow her Monster Manuel when she was trying to recruit me to play Dungeons and Dragons with her. And although we still haven’t gotten around to doing that, I’m kind of obsessed with it now. I always like roleplaying games, but this takes it to a whole other level.
So I decided to read this book with the light blue cover and long title, and I was fully prepared for intense D&D sessions.
AND IT’S SO MUCH MORE THAN D&D. This book is real as s***.
A legitimate geeky book written by an awesomely geeky man who understands the classic geeky teenager. And. it. Was. On. Point. (let’s all take a flashback to high school and understand how true this is. You there? CAN YOU SEE IT!? Jesus. I have goosebumps now.).
Anyways, this book was raw. (“you know what else is raw?”-Archie, probably.) And as many times as I rolled my eyes every time Archie said something similar to THAT, I was laughing and crying just as much.
Meet the heroes of this quest:
Archie.
Dante.
Mari.
Sam.
I can’t even deal with how perfectly imperfect they all were. How perfect they were for each other. You know how some people just fit together? Yeah. These 4 got it down.
(not even mentioning Sarah because EAD, SARAH!) Side note: I honestly didn’t know what ‘EAD’ stood for until my 19 year old brother informed me, and now my 24 year old self uses it way too much for the profession that I am in.
And the trials and misfortunes they go through are just life. It’s just life and it’s coming through so honestly because of these 4 goobers that definitely know how to cast a resurrection spell, but probably don’t know how to change a tire are going with the motions. One blow at a time.
Road trip books remain a favorite of mine and I was pleasantly surprised that halfway thought it turns into just that! And it was the trip of a lifetime. From tornadoes to alligators, you’d think they were traveling through Florida and not Ohio.
An Infinite Number of Parallel Universes dips into the inner minds of teenagers in the most practical way. A story of family and friends and the realization that the line between the two is very thin.

An Infinite Number of Parallel Universes was just the geeky, funny, heart-warming, friendship tale I was seeking! Archie, Mari, Dante, and Sam have been friends since sixth grade when they bonded over Dungeons & Dragons. Now, it's the summer before their senior year and each of them is going through something. At first, they're all dealing alone, but then an impromptu roadtrip brings them all together for a trip they'll never forget.
I really liked the format that An Infinite Number of Parallel Universes is written in. There's five sections, with the first four being the week leading up to the road trip, and the fifth is the actual trip. Of course, four sections means each of the friends gets one, which was a great way to get to know them. Even though it does cover the same time frame, it's not repetitive at all. We see their individual problems as they develop, and when they are together, we see something different and gaps are filled in.
An Infinite Number of Parallel Universes touches on a lot of important topics. Archie is dealing with the fallout of his parents' divorce. He's being forced to move with his dad, which at first seems like he just doesn't want to start over at a new school. But then we learn that Archie is struggling with the fact that his father is gay. He's not homophobic, but he isn't quite sure how he feels about it. Mari learns that her mom has cancer, and she wants her to reach out to her birth mother. Mari doesn't want to worry about some strange woman when the woman who raised her could be dying! Dante is gay and his family is upset about it because they're religious and hoping to pray the gay away. Then Sam's girlfriend suddenly moves and dumps him, and he is not handling it well at all. In fact, the road trip is his idea to win her back! Lots of stuff going on.
The road trip portion was a lot of fun. The group gets up to lots of hijinks which I won't spoil for you! It's not all fun and games though. They do have some heart-to-hearts as their issues come to light. There is a scene near the end with Dante that nearly gave me a heart attack! I seriously let out a breath that I didn't know I had been holding.
I really enjoyed An Infinite Number of Parallel Universes. There's friendship, and I love friendship! There's family issues, relationship issues, coming out issues, and it all just worked without feeling overwhelming. I do wish there had been more at the end though. I'm happy for a happy ending, but I would have liked to have known how everything worked out when they got home, especially for Dante and his grandparents.

Can't stop reading!

Just got my book today when I got home from work. Opened it up to read the first few pages...and haven't put it down yet! So glad I found this book. Looking forward to the next release from this author.
